[opensuse-support] anyone running Folding@Home on LEAP 15.1?
Hi, all -- I tried to grab the Folding@Home software and go to town, but I've run into hiccups left and right. The OpenSuSE wiki page https://en.opensuse.org/Folding@Home is apparently out of date, talking about 6.x and pointing to a dead client link. I hit the F@H Linux page https://foldingathome.org/support/faq/installation-guides/linux/manual-insta... and grabbed the 7.x RPM files and installed sudo rpm -i --nodeps fahclient-7.5.1-1.x86_64.rpm fahcontrol-7.5.1-1.noarch.rpm fahviewer-7.5.1-1.x86_64.rpm (with --nodeps straight from their steps) apparently successfully, but that's it. Running FAHControl (either as me or as root; I'd rather use the fahclient account fahclient:x:456:100:Folding@home Client:/var/lib/fahclient:/sbin/nologin created during the install, but davidtg@gezebel:~> sudo -iu fahclient This account is currently not available. that doesn't work) pops up the GUI window, but it can't talk to localhost. Running FAHClient complains davidtg@gezebel:~> FAHClient FAHClient: error while loading shared libraries: libssl.so.10: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory about missing SSL, which I find a little surprising but might be because The World Has Changed since I was routinely installing & configuring. Surely there must be a config FAQ out there that will tell me how to get this thing talking. Maybe there's even some SuSE experience that can lead me in the right direction :-) Any suggestions? I know that's not the answer you're looking for, that's why I changed the subject. When I got interested in the topic I found that Folding@home provides only binary rpm for fedora. It was obvious for me that it won't run on openSUSE (I'm using Tumbleweed, so it's even more likely to be incompatible). Instead I went with BOINC platform, which is Free Software and available in our repository (sudo zypper in boinc-client boinc-manager). It allows to run tasks for multiple projects. One of available projects is Rosetta@home (https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/). It's also involved in fighting SARS-CoV-2: https://www.ipd.uw.edu/2020/02/rosettas-role-in-fighting-coronavirus/

I had SETI@home running in The Old Days, but that was a few iterations ago... Android version is alive as well!

Installation of boinc-client creates a dedicated user and you can start the client with `sudo systemctl enable --now boinc-client`. Then you can connect to it with BOINC Manager. To make it work flawlessly you have to add your user to boinc group. Otherwise you have to use `sudo cat /var/lib/boinc/gui_rpc_auth.cfg` to see the rpc password.
Bonus, also :-) I've needed this kick in the pants to get going again for a while now. I had SETI@home running in The Old Days, but that was a few iterations ago...
Yeah... I remember when I was little kid, my father once installed SETI@home. And now, shortly before COVID-19 outbreak they decided to stop distributing work. (see news at https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/)

Thanks! That's good to know, too. Whichever I get going, I then have KNOPPIX, MacOS, Android, and maybe Windows to get going again, too :-) % % I hope this helps % Cris Thanks again & HAND :-D -- David T-G See http://justpickone.org/davidtg/email/ See http://justpickone.org/davidtg/tofu.txt -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org
Hi, I was unable to make it run on TW (bunch of weird dependencies, practically unsolvable on openSUSE, IMHO), so I installed VM with CentOS and installed it there. Even this required some manual work, e.g. force /usr/bin/python to Python 2.7. The packages don't seem to be well prepared. V. Dne středa 25. března 2020 12:19:37 CET, David T-G napsal(a):

Well, it asks for openSUSE 11.x....what do you expect? They do not seem to release the source code, so there is no chance to build a proper package on OBS. (But maybe you can give them a hint what nice tool OBS is) Cheers Axel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

The last line is from /sbin/nologin. If you want to use it, you'll have to override the shell, probably with '-s' . -- Per Jessen, Zürich (6.6°C) Member, openSUSE Heroes -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org
