I have has success doing that.

If you are using wifi - you have to select ipp as the device to see the printer.

What does the hplip see when you try to install it?

The program 'hp-doctor' can be found in following packages:
  * hplip [ path: /usr/bin/hp-doctor, repository: zypp (os-repo-oss) ]
  * hplip [ path: /usr/bin/hp-doctor, repository: zypp (os-repo-sle-update) ]

Try installing with:
    sudo zypper install hplip

It was bought very recently, so I wouldn't think it's a too old model.
