OT: X Server with cygwin. Was Re:[suse-security] safety with scp
Hi
Nevertheless gives a nice X-Server. ;-)
Oh, yes, i forgot it. Problem is... i am unable to use it. The first time i used cygwin i did it with administrator w2k user. From then on, i use a regular user, but with administration rights, though (company policy). Administrator user can launch X server, but not any other user (at this point, i really miss the su - linux capability). When i launch the startx command, this is what i get (in a popup window): A fatal error has occurred and Cygwin/X will now exit. Please open /tmp/XWin.log for more information. Hi miguel, last time i had trouble with cygwin like that a complete uninstall - new install helped. Try to install as that user working with cygwin. never found out why ;-(( Dirk miguel gmail wrote:

solved! the file c:\cygwin\tmp\XWin.log is the culprit. Other user than my win Admin is unable to write on it. However, my windows user has admin rights on this machine. I tried to delete it from the windows GUI, to no success. I tried today the following: $ rm XWin.log rm: remove write-protected regular file `XWin.log'? Y at a cygwin shell and worked it out. Just run again ´startx´ and you will see it work. HTH -- Saludos, miguel

...and I guess the rights on that file don't give your actual account permission to open it. Simply remove that file and you should have a go. Cheers, Ralf

Running as an admin user... and people wonder why Windows boxes have security problems ;-) Not having a go at *you*, but at people in various departments I work with who insist they need to run as administrator. I know what you mean about lack of "su" - here's one way to get round it: I run XP as a Restricted user. In Start -> Run I have "runas /user:[administrative user name] cmd" I get a prompt for a password and then I have a command promt running as root^H^H^H^Hadministrator If you need to use GUI tools you can drag and drop them into this command prompt. Doesn't work for all parts of the control panel but you can get what you need if you try long enough. If I was a Windows whizz it's be much faster. je je, i know what you mean. Point is that my company gave the laptop ´as is´, with the user created, and a lotus notes profile for such user.

I am using w2k... this is, i cannot use that revolutionary and cutting edge technology to switch user in the middle of a sesion :-( ;-)

I might upgrade to WXP, but not sure if it is worth of it. -- Saludos, miguel

Revolutionary ;) Hmm... Anyway, you don't need WXP to use the runas command. It has been available since WinNT and can be used in W2K. C:\>runas RUNAS USAGE: RUNAS [/profile] [/env] [/netonly] /user: program /profile if the user's profile needs to be loaded /env to use current environment instead of user's. /netonly use if the credentials specified are for remote access only. /user should be in form USER@DOMAIN or DOMAIN\USER program command line for EXE. See below for examples Examples:
runas /profile /user:mymachine\administrator cmd runas /profile /env /user:mydomain\admin "mmc %windir%\system32\dsa.msc" runas /env /user:user@domain.microsoft.com "notepad \"my file.txt\""
NOTE: Enter user's password only when prompted. NOTE: USER@DOMAIN is not compatible with /netonly. //Regards Tony ************************************ Tony Stohne mailto: tstohne@bredband.net ************************************
