I notice that many packages which were available on 9.1 are no longer available from SuSE on 9.2, e.g., snort and nessus. Would it be safe to download the 9.1 packages (snort.rpm and nessus-core.rpm)? Are there any plans to increase the number of 9.2 packages available?

So why there are differences between CD and DVD anyway? 5CD's = 3.5 GB/DVD = 4.7 GB O.K., but why are there any packages missing? Before there were 7 CD's. Imo there should not be any differences on both media depending on if you have a dvd or cd drive. Philippe

The space needed for the software grows and it is not feasible to add more CD's into the package. Befeore thre were 7 CDs however DVDs were not common at them time. This doesn't make a lot of sense. I just received my SuSE 9.2 and they come in a plastic case that could easily hold twice as many disks as the 7 that are actually in there. I to think there should be some consistency between the software on the dvds and the cds. -- Until later, Geoffrey

It will when you start thinking in $ or € instead of what type of package. if I cd costs 1 cent to produce 2 will make it 2 cents per package if you create 50,000 packages 100,000 cents which is 1000 € now since the cost is higher then 1 ¢ and the packages created should be more then 50,000 that total would go up. That is how I see it and when you are selling a product which basicalyy is provided within a month or so free of charge via FTP and for the packages that are sold installation support is available, I would do the same if I was in themanagement of SUSE. That is pure business approach -- Togan Muftuoglu | Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer | Please reply to the list; http://susefaq.sf.net | Please don't put me in TO/CC. Nisi defectum, haud refiecendum

Well, we'll just have to disagree. The price for the pro version has risen. Further, I'd rather see consistency between the medias and let them keep their pretty packaging. Book to, for that matter. -- Until later, Geoffrey

No way, the books are a critical part of the package. Dropping either of them from the package severely devalues it. I'd rather see them drop the CD's and not use these dual layer DVDs, just put everything on 4 - 5 DVDs. Personal opinion, I've not used the books since probably 6.2.

The cds are move necessary than the books. There are still folks out there who don't have a dvd reader on their box. -- Until later, Geoffrey

DVD != 4.7 GB. It's dual layer, so it's 8+GB, it has x86_64 packages as well, plus around 1.5GB more i586 packages than the CDs. It would take about 8 CDs to fit all the i586+noarch packages in How many floppies were in the very first suse version? :)

There is room for 8 cds in the case. -- Until later, Geoffrey
