I also want to know, if there any possibilities to scan for viruses.
That's probably something that's better done on a mail server. Sure, but my box is a http-proxy too and three weeks ago, we had the nimda-virus on internal workstations .
Well, a lot of tools for scanning at the SMTP level do exist (see www.openantivirus.org for a product list). The only open-source soultion I know for squid is called "viralator" (with a small patch, it can be used for ftp-traffic to if squid works as ftp-proxy, too). viralator needs squirm and, of course a virus scanner. It works, but don't expect it's fast or really useable if several hunderts clients are conencted to your proxy.

Do you know something about kasperksy anti-virus? We use it on M$-Boxes and it works fine. thx in advance Wolfgang Hirsch

Of course I know Kaspersky Lab's products and some poeple (as I'm in contact with various av vendors, too). Kasperksy Anti-Virus runs on (SuSE) Linux (in previous releases their installer didn't recognize SuSE Linux correctly), their scan engine is highly regarded (see www.virusbtn.com or www.av-test.org) but some releaes of their kavdaemon (formerly AVPDaemon) has had some bugs (i.e. consuming 100% cpu time, see the amavis-user mailing list for details). They offer a solutions for SMTP-servers (IIRC sendmail, qmail, postfix) but I'm not aware of any product for http-proxies such as squid. best regards, Rainer Link -- Rainer Link | SuSE - The Linux Experts link@suse.de | Developer of A Mail Virus Scanner (amavis.org) www.suse.de | Founder OpenAntiVirus Project (www.openantivirus.org)

The implementation of KAV for Linux is... brrr.. ;-) Just download it from their site - I think it'll run without keyfile at least in demo mode, but I'm not sure. I dislike the whole concept (daemonized). I like AntiVir from H+BEDV (www.antivir.de) better, as it works flawlessly with AMaViS(-perl here). The implementation is really good, try it! The software looks very clean. They also offer AntiVir Mailgate (which you don't need when using AMaViS - I like it better) in which an update-scipt for virus definitions is included - works great. You can get a free private license for both programs which enables you to run AntiVir without restrictions (e.g. at home for test purposes). -- Mit freundlichen Gruessen / Yours sincerely Wolfram Schlich * E-Mail: wolfram@schlich.org * ICQ: UIN 35713642 Postal: Berghof, D-56626 Andernach-Kell * Phone: +49-(0)2636-941194
