Minimum package selection
Hi everybody, I am currently trying to install a secure backup file server with Suse 8.1. As I only want to install the strict MINIMUM among the packages available, I wonder if anyone has done the same before, i.e. selected a minimum set of packages which allows you to boot your box correctly and not much more. To do this I have installed the Suse minimum installation and deselected lots of packages, but I am not sure whether I can still take away some more packages..... "rpm -q -a | sort " gives me the attached list and y wonder if I can reduce further more this list. Any help or comments are greatly appreciated Lars
Hi Lars,
"rpm -q -a | sort " gives me the attached list and y wonder if I can reduce further more this list.
You can safely remove (at least) these packages: at-3.1.8-604 bc-1.06-455 bootsplash-1.0-40 bootsplash-theme-SuSE-1.0-40 ctags-2002.7.18-26 ed-0.2-594 eject-2.0.12-150 gpm-1.20.1-37 hdparm-5.2-23 hwinfo-5.32-0 netcat-1.10-595 pgp-2.6.3in001006-326 (gpg is enough) procmail-3.15.1-307 reiserfs-3.6.2-31 (only if you don't use ReiserFS) tcl-8.4-48 w3m-0.3.1-60 To find out more about the other packages, use Yast to look at the descriptions of the packages and decide by yourself. Or use "rpm -q --list package-name" to get a list of all files included in the package and then "man package-binary" to read the corresponding man page. I've written a tool for determining the minimum requirements of packages. You
will need the Python RPM module here:
ftp://ftp.funktronics.ca/pub/rpm/SuSE-8.1/i586-f/rpm-python-3.0.6-1.i586.rpm
Here's the script:
http://www.funktronics.ca/scripts/mininstall
Basically, run 'mininstall
