Hi Geert-Jan,
Hi guys,
A question with respect to using 6.4 rpm packages on a 6.3 installation: Is it save to install a 6.4 rpm on a 6.3 system ??
Best regards,

Of course, it's best to use packages made for the system where you want to
install them. I some cases this becomes more important than it might look
at the first glance, f.ex. packages that require PAM authentication
modules, stuff that is made from c++ code and such.
I used to keep it this way: Everything that is close to the kernel, the
library space or that is security relevant needs to fit the distribution.
Other stuff such as KDE application or things that don't wreck the whole
system when they fail don't matter. With SuSE packages, the rpm system's
dependency checks should keep you from installing packages that don't fit.
Install and try.
Since the dependency/provides-symbols in rpm packages differ from vendor
to vendor, it might be necessary sometimes to install an rpm package using
the additional rpm flags "--nodeps" or even "--force". In these cases,
it's left up to the admin to resolve the dependencies by hand. If you can
also make sure that the packages come from a reliable, trusted source,
you're on the safe side.
Thanks,
Roman.
