I am running Suse 7.3 with kernel rpm k_deflt-2.4.10-25. And, I am getting this once in a while: Mar 8 08:12:53 lsound2 kernel: Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtua l address 0019003a Mar 8 08:12:53 lsound2 kernel: printing eip: Mar 8 08:12:53 lsound2 kernel: c01337e1 Mar 8 08:12:53 lsound2 kernel: *pde = 00000000 Mar 8 08:12:53 lsound2 kernel: Oops: 0002 Mar 8 08:12:53 lsound2 kernel: CPU: 0 Mar 8 08:12:53 lsound2 kernel: EIP: 0010:[__remove_from_lru_list+21/104] Mar 8 08:12:53 lsound2 kernel: EFLAGS: 00010202 Mar 8 08:12:53 lsound2 kernel: eax: 00000000 ebx: 00000002 ecx: c031ff20 edx: 0019001a Mar 8 08:12:53 lsound2 kernel: esi: c031ff20 edi: c031ff20 ebp: c258c060 esp: c2595ea8 Mar 8 08:12:53 lsound2 kernel: ds: 0018 es: 0018 ss: 0018 Mar 8 08:12:53 lsound2 kernel: Process ecasound (pid: 998, stackpage=c2595000) Mar 8 08:12:53 lsound2 kernel: Stack: 00000002 c0134631 c031ff20 00000000 c031f f20 00001000 c0134662 c031ff20 Mar 8 08:12:53 lsound2 kernel: c01350c8 c031ff20 c258c060 0022b02c 00000 000 c100ac40 00001000 00000000 Mar 8 08:12:53 lsound2 kernel: c0135790 c258c060 c100ac40 00000000 00000 02c c2595f30 0022b02c 00000000 and a freeze after that. Does anybody have an idea, why this is happenning. Is it more likely to be related to a hardware problem or a kernel bug? Any suggestions to prevent that? --- Selcuk Ozturk

try a kernel update, 2.4.16 is on the suse ftp. -- intraDAT AG http://www.intradat.com Wilhelm-Leuschner-Strasse 7 Tel: +49 69-25629-0 D - 60329 Frankfurt am Main Fax: +49 69-25629-256 Junk mail is war. RFCs do not apply.
Let me expound on it a little bit more. I have actually 3 machines doing the same thing: basically sound recording with multiple sound cards. They are continuously at around 30-40% CPU utilization. They are all Suse 7.3's. 2 with 2.4.10 kernel, 1 with the 2.4.16 kernel which is at the ftp.suse.com. They all have the same problem, once in a while. Although, 2.4.16 seems to log the same error message but, still continues to function whereas 2.4.10's freeze. I am not too sure on this point, though. So, I tend to think that might be a kernel problem rather than hardware. It also seems to happen more often on the slowest machine. On Fri, 8 Mar 2002, Sven Michels wrote:

Hi, I had the same error with a missconfigured APM BIOS. I loaded the factory settings and the load fail safe settings and since then my computer works very stable. Ciao ;-) Robert Rottscholl - DE Selcuk Ozturk wrote:
