Greetings. In Sun Solaris, there's a data-collector tool called Explorer that queries a Sun box & generates tons of technical info about it in text format, which is very useful for troubleshooting & documentation. Is there an equivalent tool for SuSE Linux, or for Linux in general? Any info you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Sun Explorer runs a bunch of scripts and commands and collects it all in a series of directories. It also collects system configuration information (e.g. /etc/system, /etc/vfstab, and so on). Since SuSE run on x86 you have no equivalent to OpenBoot to give the device tree -- no such thing exists. You can get some stuff out of /proc though. One of the crucial things Explorer does other than software configuration info is run prtdiag -v which collects not only a summary view of the hardware (i.e. sans the device tree stuff) but also lists hardware faults. PC hardware lacks the extensive diagnostic hw that a SUN midrange or highend server has. On Wed, 7 Sep 2005, Escudero, Peter Louis wrote:
