I'm in a situation where I want to set up a remote file server and give people i know and trust access to it so they can dl just about anything 24/7. My first instinct was to use VSFTP because, well an idiot can use ftp. But I'd really rather use ssh, and have them use WinSCP because their mostly windows users. However I'd like to have the logging capabilities that the ftp programs have so i can see what files were accessed, downloaded, uploaded, speed, all the normal stuff, IS this possible/where would I go to find it? If the only thing that you want people to do is download and not upload then Apache + mod_ssl with authentication would be my choice. Another alternative is using pure-ftpd over VPNs.

--> I think one (not very elegant) solution would be to run the SSH-daemon in debug mode ("-vvv") and then filter the interesting lines from /var/log/messages.
