Hi, I wonder if its in the future roadmap of the radeaonhd driver to support the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5830 card? I see that this card is not currently in the supported card list. (Also, it's not supported by the 'official' ATI binary Linux driver either.) I have a laptop with such a card, which brings up the 'radeon' driver when starting X, and it's far from perfect. If support for such a card is on the roadmap, and I can help in any way.. Akos -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: radeonhd+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: radeonhd+help@opensuse.org
Support for HD5xxx was only added to radeon very recently, and the support needs to be ported across to radeonhd once some of the initial problems are worked out. Unless you have built radeon from git master in the last few days you may find you are actually running vesa rather than radeon, btw. -----Original Message----- From: Maróy Ákos [mailto:akos@maroy.hu] Sent: Sunday, February 14, 2010 2:15 PM To: radeonhd@opensuse.org Subject: [radeonhd] support for ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5830? John,

I see..
Unless you have built radeon from git master in the last few days you may find you are actually running vesa rather than radeon, btw.
I seem to be running 'radeon', not 'radeonhd'. if I try to force 'radeonhd', I get an error message saying '(EE) No devices detected'. I'm using Ubuntu packages made here: https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa the latest radeonhd build being from 8th February. should I try a build from git? Building radeonhd from git won't help yet. -----Original Message----- From: Maróy Ákos [mailto:akos@maroy.hu] Sent: Sunday, February 14, 2010 2:38 PM To: Bridgman, John Cc: radeonhd@opensuse.org Subject: Re: [radeonhd] support for ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5830? John,

Rafal,
radeon (xf86-video-ati)
you're suggesting to use the radeon driver instead of radeonhd? that's what I'm using now, and interestingly it doesn't really work out well.. I was hoping radeonhd would be a more promising driver eventually.. Akos -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: radeonhd+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: radeonhd+help@opensuse.org

Yes, I mean radeon (xf86-video-ati) instead of radeonhd (xf86-video-radeonhd). However you have to use git version. The real promise for future is KMS, where kernel is responsible for setting modes (resolution, refreshing rate). However it's harder to test because you have to checkout and compile whole kernel from git. -- Rafał -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: radeonhd+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: radeonhd+help@opensuse.org

I'm a bit confused now - should I compile the radeon driver from git, or should I compile the whole kernel from git latest? Akos -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: radeonhd+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: radeonhd+help@opensuse.org

Both should work, so you can choose (between radeon==xf86-video-ati and KMS). In both cases you have to use code from git. radeon is much easier and faster to checkout & compile. -- Rafał -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: radeonhd+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: radeonhd+help@opensuse.org

I'm using the following xorg-video-ati driver version: 1:6.12.99+git20100213.221ef11b-0ubuntu0sarvatt built on 13th February, from here: https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa?field.series_filter=lucid and when gdm wants to start up, I get the following error: (**) "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad": Device: "/dev/input/mouse1" (EE) ioctl EVIOCGNAME failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device (II) UnloadModule: "evdev" (EE) PreInit returned NULL for ""SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"" (II) config/udev: Adding input device "Macintosh mouse button emulation" (/dev/input/event3) (**) "Macintosh mouse button emulation": Device: "/dev/input/mouse0" (EE) ioctl EVIOCGNAME failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device (II) UnloadModule: "evdev" (EE) PreInit returned NULL for ""Macintosh mouse button emulation"" and thus gdm crashes, though startx works out fine. I also get the following: (II) RADEON(0): RADEONInitMemoryMap() : (II) RADEON(0): mem_size : 0x10000000 (II) RADEON(0): MC_FB_LOCATION : 0x00cf00c0 (II) RADEON(0): MC_AGP_LOCATION : 0x003f0000 (II) RADEON(0): Depth moves disabled by default (II) RADEON(0): Memory manager initialized to (0,0) (2048,8191) (II) RADEON(0): Reserved area from (0,1920) to (2048,1922) (II) RADEON(0): Largest offscreen area available: 2048 x 6269 (II) RADEON(0): RADEONRestoreMemMapRegisters() : (II) RADEON(0): MC_FB_LOCATION : 0x00cf00c0 0x003f0000 (II) RADEON(0): MC_AGP_LOCATION : 0x003f0000 (==) RADEON(0): Backing store disabled (WW) RADEON(0): Direct rendering disabled (EE) RADEON(0): Acceleration initialization failed (II) RADEON(0): Acceleration disabled am I doing anything wrong? (or should I post these on a different mailing list?) I can of course compile a more recent version from git.. I check out the sources from git, compiled & installed them. I get the
same error when setting radeonhd as the driver in xorg.conf:
