0x791F:0x1179:0xFF68: ATI Radeon X1250 (Embedded, Toshiba Satellite S355D-S7809)
This card has the RS690 chipset, shares the main system RAM, and was fully functional under the old catalyst drivers. Under radeonhd the display is perfect, the panel and VGA outputs are correctly recognized. However, the card is not explicitly recognized by the radeonhd driver and has no 3D support, even though the wiki says the RS690 should be supported for 3D. I spend about ten minutes attempting to add an entry to the hardware table, but my attempts resulted in a blank screen and hard lockup, though they did result in X -probe correctly recognizing the card. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: radeonhd+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: radeonhd+help@opensuse.org

Please post the usual suspects (Xorg.0.log, xorg.conf).
I assume that your driver is too old.

Please post the usual suspects (Xorg.0.log, xorg.conf). I assume that your driver is too old. This is from the latest released driver, all though the same thing happens with the latest from the GIT tree as of last night.

Hm, the log looks good. How do you determine that you have no 3D support? glxgears runs between 20 and 24fps, and other 3d programs are useless. Please check the output of glxinfo. Especially the "OpenGL renderer string:"
This is actually the only reliable hint whether 3D is working.

I'll look into that when I get home from work.

Try LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxgears
Maybe this gives you a hint why you don't have active direct rendering.

Check whether you have access (read+write) rights on /dev/dri/card0.
If not it depends on your distribution how to set this correctly. A good
first guess is the DRI section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

That is a general problem with radeonhd that I guess is being worked. With the last working verison of radeonhd I have: 16:38 alchemy:~> glxgears 761 frames in 5.0 seconds = 151.840 FPS 802 frames in 5.0 seconds = 160.316 FPS The 150-160 number remained constant with all the versions from the git repository as well. For comparison purposes, the fglrx driver on the same box with the same RS690M gives 1066 FPS. I have no idea why the difference is as big as it is, but it's there. For 2-D the radeonhd driver works great. The differences really appear when you try to rotate the desktop with kde4 desktop-effects or compiz. Then you really notice it. Hopefully, Mattias has his ouigi board warmed up and will crack the speed code in the not too distant future ;-) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Matthias, That's not the problem. Just reinstalling the latest standard radeonhd release, fixes the problem. The issue is the recent changes to the driver in the git repository. For the RS690M card, the recent changes to the driver simply cause X to blackscreen and lock when you attempt to start kdm. This behavior began with the git pull I did on July 25, 2009. Before that, the build of radeonhd worked fine. Right now I'm running on: [12:14 alchemy:/home/david] # pmq | grep radeonhd xf86-video-radeonhd 1.2.5-1 and everything is working fine. When I say "blackscreen" I mean the laptop display looks like it is unpowered or unitialized. No slight light-gray backlight you expect from the initial "blank" screen on X start. With the changes to the driver, the screen looks like it is unpowered and off. I'll post my build logs so you can look to see if they hold a clue: -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Hmm, David, Could you cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep idle That's what mine used to do. The same kind of behaviour happens when the MC is not idle. If it shows nothing, include your whole Xorg.log. If you could git bisect this issue that would be most helpful.
In your case something like
git bisect start d19a10b753d3 1.2.5
should start it correctly (assuming that the commit of 2009-07-24 was
already broken, because the next was on 2009-07-28).
And when you find the causing commit, an Xserver log of both the causing
commit and the commit before would be helpful for comparison.
Thanks

Matthias, Sorry for the delay in getting this worked. I am stuck. I did the bisect at "start d19a10b753d3 1.2.5" and the radeonhd driver still fails for the RS690M (x1200) card. git bisect start d19a10b753d3 1.2.5 git bisect run make git bisect run sudo make install The card fails just as before. Aargh. A full set of Xorg.0.log (and .1. and .old) for the bisect attempt are in: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/linux/radeonhd/crash/xorg-log2/ Prior to building the bisect start d19a10b753d3 1.2.5 driver, I had done a normal git pull and tried with the latest driver. It is dead in the water as well. The full set of xorg logs for that attempt are located here: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/linux/radeonhd/crash/xorg-log1/ There were also some concerning messages during the compile. Specifically there is a "fatal: ref HEAD is not a symbolic ref" error. I don't know if that is one of the causes of the driver failure, but "fatal" is never good. I have posted the full make output here: (7k) http://www.3111skyline.com/download/linux/radeonhd/crash/bisect-make-1.log.b... (download) (216k) http://www.3111skyline.com/download/linux/radeonhd/crash/bisect-make-1.log.t... (read online) What's the next step? How do I get another bisect earlier than the d19a10b753d3 1.2.5 one? Let me know how to proceed. I would like to get the radeonhd driver working again. I am back to the stock radeonhd package from the archlinux distro, but it doesn't include any of the powerdown stuff. (my hands are still getting *hot*) Thanks for your help, just let me know what to do next and I'll give it a shot. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Damn, We are getting there. I had to go all the way back to http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-radeonhd/commit/?id=bc42c... to get the radeonhd driver to work with the RS690M card. After doing: git bisect start bc42c63d0c 1.2.5 git bisect run make git bisect run sudo make install /etc/rc.d/kdm3 restart SUCCESS! The Radeonhd driver is working again for this card. I'll try and narrow it down. I tried http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-radeonhd/commit/?id=eabbd... and it failed the same way, so we know the bug is between bc42c63d0c and eabbde4e4c. git bisect start d19a10b753d3 1.2.5 git bisect run make git bisect run sudo make install
Err - no, you cannot automate the test in this case (because you have to check the results manually) - which is what git bisect run will do. So you have to do: - "git checkout d19a10b753d3" - compile, install, run, confirm that it's working right. - "git checkout 1.2.5" - compile, install, run, confirm that it's broken - "git bisect start d19a10b753d3 1.2.5" - compile, install, run, check whether it's broken or good when it's broken: "git bisect bad" when it's good: "git bisect good" - git bisect bad/good will provide you a new version, so repeat the last step until it tells you that we have found the culprit.
There were also some concerning messages during the compile. Specifically there is a "fatal: ref HEAD is not a symbolic ref" error. I don't know if that is one of the causes of the driver failure, but "fatal" is never good. I have posted the full make output here:
This is because you were no longer in a git bisect.
The 'git bisect run XYZ' does the bisecting automatically until the very
end, after that the bisect process is done. This is only possible if the
output (broken or good) can be determined automatically.
