[opensuse-project] openSUSE and Gmane
What is the openSUSE policy with regard to Gmane.com? Does openSUSE.org automatically subscribe Gmane.com to a new mailing list? First, I'm going to assume that you, Henne, are speaking with some level of authority and responsibility with regard to the openSUSE lists. Is that a fair deduction from other postings of yours regarding the mailing lists I have read? Then, is it acceptable for me to subscribe all the existing openSUSE lists to Gmane and follow the directions on http://Gmane.org/import.php to have Lars import each of the openSUSE archives? There are a few of the lists already subscribed and archived, but not all. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

He's our mailing list admin. I'd say that pretty much makes him the authority with regards to the openSUSE list.

Thank you. I've started with opensuse-doc. We'll see how it goes. PatrickD -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

The trick with gmane is not to pull all the headers at once when the list is subscribed. I did that once, and got blacklisted for a short while (got it sorted out with the site owner eventually). Yes, that's different than what I'm talking about. After you do the import, if you use, say, a newsreader to pull down the archive (from gmane), if all you grab is headers, you'll be blacklisted for 'harvesting'. Curious! So if you use Thunderbird, which will initially only fetch headers, and can fetch thousands on the initial run, you are blacklisted. But if you use leafnode, which fetches both headers and bodies, nothing happens. LOL. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Yep, that's my understanding. I had used a perl script that I created to pull headers, and pulled a few thousand headers for some user analysis several months ago, and got myself blocked. :) Jim -- Jim Henderson Please keep on-topic replies on the list so everyone benefits -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

What I'm doing is requesting that Gmane administrators subscribe the Gmane server to the lists.openSUSE.org lists they don't, yet, serve from Gmane and then do an import of the lists.openSUSE.org archive of the same list. I will continue to read the openSUSE lists by subscribing to them directly. I just thought it would be better if Gmane distributed all the current lists as well as those they had previously had requested.
