[opensuse-project] Google Code-in Thoughts and Reviews
Hi All, Google Code-in will come to an end in a few days. I would like to take the opportunity to ask feedback from people. We can discuss it from here. Personally for me, the questions that I had like to ask are this 1. How do you think Google Code-in helped us? 2. Where are the areas we can try to improve and how can we improve? A very special Thanks to Matt, Vincent, mentors and students who made this possible. -- Regards Manu Gupta -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

Congratulations to all of you that made this happen. Personally, I had many translation tasks, surveys about openSUSE. Translation tasks helped us to complete some sections we didn't have time or the clear mind to translate before the release of 12.1. Of course now we have to review them more carefully for spelling and grammar mistakes. We're working for 12.2 already. Regarding the surveys, there were some great conclusions about the distro and the community. I'll try to get all the answers, delete some entries that students complete the questionnaire just to have the proper amount for their task, and make the total conclusions. Maybe then I can answer better your questions Manu. Regarding my country, we need a better promo plan to schools (although it's difficult for us to go and talk to students directly due to the organization of the educational system). Maybe write some more to the press, where the parents read, so they can push their kids to participate. As far as I know, Greek students were only translating (in Gnome too). How can we help them do some coding? Maybe this way they can join and help our community. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

There are obviously direct benefits in some tasks solving some of our real issues, like wiki front page, some cleanup of wiki templates, translations for Greek language wiki, etc. For me it helped to see how to organize "How to participate?" area of openSUSE.
2. Where are the areas we can try to improve and how can we improve?
It was obvious that Greek guys understood better then anyone who are contest participants, their goals and average skills. For the next year we have to start collecting tasks early, possibly from lists of open tasks that we will create for people that want to contribute to openSUSE.
A very special Thanks to Matt, Vincent, mentors and students who made this possible.
Thank you to you too, for organizing everything and convincing people that openSUSE should be one of participating organizations. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

All credits should go to Manu and Matt -- I did nearly nothing :-) So thanks to both of you! Vincent -- Les gens heureux ne sont pas pressés. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

The translations, both into Greek and Turkish, were very successful. Perhaps next year translation should be a particular focus. Also, I think next year we should figure out a way to make sure that finished tasks are reviewed within 48 hours - there were cases where a task was waiting for review for several days because the mentor was not available, and that's not fair to the student. All in all, though, I think it was a good experience - many thanks to the mentors, all of whom really did a great job :-) -- Matt Barringer, Software Engineer SUSE Linux Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, DE GF: Jeff Hawn, Jennifer Guild, Felix Imendörffer, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg)

Well for Greek Community it was really good and got things to another level faster than normally, now all we have to do is continue as a local communitty the work of the students. The other tasks beyond the Greek communitty we made was also very good and soon I will upload the How-to Videos to thewiki along with everything else so that we provide more help to the new and average openSUSE user. For me it went beyong I imagined it would go, I really liked that and I am glad I participated

Well Stathis, Rajko and Matt told almost everything, all I want to add is to promote this more to local communities, since a lot of good things may come out of this. From helping to the localization of the project (finding more local contributors in order to built stronger local communities) to get more students that will benefit from GCI in all sectors (knowledge, financial, certain working experience).
A very special Thanks to Matt, Vincent, mentors and students who made this possible.

Let's keep the wiki page since there are some tasks that we can repeat next year... I think we all brought the best possible results to the project so Hail to all of us :-) I will be waiting for next year's GCI :D Kostas -- http://opensuse.gr http://amb.opensuse.gr http://own.opensuse.gr http://warlordfff.tk me I am not me ------- Time travel is possible, you just need to know the right aliens -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

I have to say +1 to the other two Greek fellows (Stathis and Kostas). Spesifically, the Greek community had a lot of help with the translation tasks, both for the distribution and the wiki. We just now need to do a better review and that's all. I think the students here in Greece worked with great enthusiasm, and I think that translation tasks, surveys and educational use case videos was really a good choice for the target group age. It is a good idea to focus on this kind of tasks for the next GCI. It was a really good experience for us and me personally and I believe we might get to keep those contributors in the project.
2. Where are the areas we can try to improve and how can we improve?
I think the others covered me fully, I have nothing more to add here. I just want to say that especially I agree with Matt, we need a biiiig todo list like the one with the junior jobs in the wiki to use as a task pool even for the next GCI. Plus, openFATE is a good source of todos but I don't really think they are appropriate for that age target group.
A very special Thanks to Matt, Vincent, mentors and students who made this possible.
Many thanks to everybody that helped in any way in this effort. Eftstathios Agrapidis (efagra) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org
