[opensuse-project] openSUSE 11.0 Countdown
Good news everyone! Billy Juliani sent me beatiful design of countdown timers. I created PHP code which prints numbers into them and the result can be seen here: http://en.opensuse.org/Countdown . We hope you like it. Hyperlink now points to http://en.opensuse.org/Roadmap but I can change it to any better page later. It would be great if someone took his/her time and created a new wiki page - with a list of new killer features of 11.0 and call for beta testers - information for community how to test beta releases. -- Best Regards / S pozdravom, Pavol RUSNAK SUSE LINUX, s.r.o Package Maintainer Lihovarska 1060/12 PGP 0xA6917144 19000 Praha 9, CR prusnak[at]suse.cz http://www.suse.cz --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Some thoughts: * The first banner says "openSUSE 11" instead of 11.0, which is not quite right. * Would be nice if it could have some Geeko artwork I think? Perhaps in the background? Really not sure how, sorry. * Javascript should make it possible for us to change the link it forwards to in the future (i.e. so we could link to a feature list later, or change the link if we need to). Could be done by just making it forward to a page which we can change later. Should also have this hosted on the openSUSE server when it's ready. I actually typed in "openSUSE 11.0" but it changed automatically to
"OpenSUSE 11.0". I guess it's something with the wiki software.

And this one is rendered on server-side (just a small PHP script),
localized (*) depending on the browser locale and doesn't require any
javascript at all:
http://v3nus.homelinux.net:13000/
(thanks to jimmac for the design, translations have been contributed by
many on IRC)
(*) I already have en, de, fr, nl, it, se, pl, ru, el, da, nb, sv, fi,
cs, hr -- if you have another language to contribute... :)
I think that server-side rendering has some advantages:
- - pixel precision: Javascript based ones are screwed as soon as the user
zooms the font
- - doesn't require any Javascript support at all, it's just a plain PNG
- - can be localized from the HTTP headers sent by the browser (as any
website); you can't do that with Javascript, unfortunately
- - can render with the official, non-free openSUSE font (Cholla) as its
drawn on the template on the server and doesn't require that font to be
present on users' hosts (which isn't the case for obvious reasons)
- - less bytes to download (no Javascript, no jquery)
Downsides:
- - doesn't render quite as nicely as a browser does as the gd2 PHP image
functions don't do antialiasing (but I don't think it's that much worse,
judge for yourself)
- - positioning isn't exactly as good as a browser's CSS engine either,
have to compute everything on my own, pixel by pixel on the server-side
(doable though, I'm just a little lazy to code all that)
- - doesn't have the nice fade-in effect jimmac implements in his
Javascript version (top left on the URL above)
Thanks to darix, we could have that stuff up on countdown.opensuse.org
quickly.
Only TODOs remaining:
- - your feedback (yes, you ;))
- - more translations
- - code singular support (which is quite tricky in some languages such as
russian (thanks to Coolo for pointing that out), or even czech)
Comments ?
cheers

Not needed, the rendering is extremely fast. It just takes a template
picture and renders 2 or 3 strings on it.
And it isn't one PNG per day as it also depends on the locale requested
by the browser.
Handling the purge of a persistent cache (on disk) is more work than
just drawing the strings on it every time (as said, it's very fast).

It isn't localized. The counter.o.o one will be (still waiting for the
vhost), so that might be a better option for the front page.
And I guess I could implement a much larger one -- would just need
jimmac to provide me with a larger version of the background, as I suck
tremendously at inkscape ;)
