Yes, I worked with util-linux. I know there are several fdisks which support GPT beside GNU fdisk. GNU fdisk is implemented with libparted support. But as a basic package I don't think util-linux should depend on libparted. At personal side, I think GPT suppoted util-linux has more value than other GPT fdisk. Because it's deliverded by all Linux distributions and most widely used. when I just want to format a partition but util-linux fdisk failed with GPT, I just turn to Mac's disk utility and don't want to compile and install another version of fdisk even directly use parted. Because the failure of util-linux fdisk makes me unconfident of linux disk utilities. I think util-linux has the symbolic meaning. Parted could deal with GPT, why util-linux not. This project aims at not only adding GPT support, but also cleaning up util-linux fdisk code to make it more extensible. So I think it's a meaningful project. I have read your wiki pages. openSUSE ship mostly the "util-linux" one, but the is also gnu fidsk (linked to parted):
