[opensuse-project] Naming of the new group/project and other stuff maybe at the conference.
Hello,
After talking with a few people I would like to solicit ideas for a new
name for our openSLES project. The driving factor for this is to avoid
confusion with SLES. It will also allow us to avoid any conflicts with
copyright, trademark and branding.
So put on your hats and assist us with comping up with a new name.
Also, I would like to request that maybe someone could bring up the
subject of forming this group at the up comming SUSE conference.
This is our chance for those attending to discuss what we may do to be
able to have one voice to talk to Novell. I think that maybe using the
new name could assist us in having a larger group of people joined
together that will have enough buying power to be heard by the upper
Novell management.
I think this is a good topic for discussion at the conference. I hope we
may find someone that is attending the conference to chapion it.
Thanks,

You can find at least a partial list of trademarks on Novell's site here:
http://www.novell.com/company/legal/trademarks/tmlist.html
If you have questions about Novell trademarks that you need a
definitive answer to, email permission@novell.com. They'll usually
respond pretty quickly.

Boyd, In the above you use Geeko often, and Gecko never. Is that all typos, or are you avoiding Gecko? If Geeko is accurate, I think it is a really poor choice. Gecko I like. Geeko the Gecko is the SUSE mascot. I'm not sure if his name is trademarked.
So we could interchange Geeko for Gecko if necessary.

Actually as it occured to me that virtually all SLES/SUSE development
takes place in Nuremburg and southern germany, we could call it Black
Forest Enterprise Linux (BFEL). Technically the Black Forest is in
Baden-Wuttenburg but its adjacent to Bavaria where Nuremberg is.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_forest
The Black Forest also has very positive connotations for the german
people and is heavy grounded in mythology. Whereas unfortunately
Nuremberg has less than positive connotations in modern history. The
Black Forest is where the industry of making Cuckoo Clocks came from,
we could use the cookoo as our mascot.
We could also call it Bavarian Enterprise Linux. Bavaria has very
positive connotations for producing quality products, such as BMW and
Audi automobiles and is where Siemens and Grundig is headquartered. It
also, of course, is where Oktoberfest is celebrated.

That is not true. We have the build farm in Nuernberg but engineers are world-wide - and I expect that more than 50 per cent are not in Nuernberg. Open Enterprise Server would be confusing as it's a Novell product. Right, OES awakens old memories. Not good.
My vote is for OSES. OpenSUSE Enterprise Server. As simple as that. Certainly for those who used OESv1. OES2 isn't bad, especially with the latest service pack applied.
My vote is for OSES.
I think just openSUSE LTS would be sufficient, myself. Jim -- Jim Henderson Please keep on-topic replies on the list so everyone benefits -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org
hi,
My vote is for OSES. OpenSUSE Enterprise Server. As simple as that.

KVES Klatu Verata Niktu Enterprise Server Please note the spelling, there's another Klatu but it should be deemed untrustworthy. Actually the proper spelling is Klaatu Barada Nikto.

You have a very good point. I have added it to the names I am collecting.
Open Enterprise Server would be confusing as it's a Novell product.
I agree.

A testament to Novell's marketing prowess, no doubt, *cough, ahem* ;) "Just like netware, only better" I fondly remember the day when there was _nothing_ better than Netware. Arguably on some fronts there is still nothing better than Netware + NDS, but I digress. Novell's products have always been renowned for their technical excellence. Netware, NDS/eDir and so on. SuSE linux was always known for it's great engineering and technical excellence also. If there's a need for a stepping stone to SLES, then the product/distro/project should not lose sight of the core engineering excellence that Novell Inc and SuSE Gmbh stand for. The project/product name should reflect the aforementioned technical excellence; non-descriptive names such as green, rock, blue, black, purple, geecko, nerdo, mean, lean, fighting, machine... these are just confusing. Focus on your goal, and *name it appropriately*. Engineers and technical decision makers are your target audience, not "Trendy Toad" desktop installs. Great engineering is cool, bad acronyms are not. I think that's my point, for now. -- “Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes.” ☘ Oscar Wilde -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

I remembered the product. I was just listing everything reported. I have
since done a quick review and removed the one where I think there are
issues. I will post a final list. I am setting up a webpage listing
them. I was using FAQ-O-Matic. But I did not really like it for this
purpose. I need to finish the installation and setup of the wiki for my
site. It would be wiki.zenez.com. I did not want to put it on the
openSUSE wiki as I do not want any possible legal issues. I have not
heard back from the community wiki persons I emailed about using it. So
it is not up there. So the only real option is my finishing the wiki
setup on my domain.
