Hi, Can someone explain to me how to send e-mail with my opensuse.org e-mail address? The address itself is working fine: I can receive e-mails. But what SMTP server would I for sending? Hartmut, I. It is an forwarding address which forwards to your primary account. I think the implication is that by sending from an address that (appears to be) in the opensuse.org domain you are effectively trying to impersonate someone officially affiliated with the openSUSE project. And frankly, I don't really think you should do this. Email addresses are infinitely available, for either special purposes or one-time (disposable) use. You should use such an address if you don't want to post as your "true self" (whatever that is, these days).

"We" (an ill-defined notion) value many things. Many of us value honesty, transparency and forthrightness over privacy (whatever that is, these days) and much more than deceptiveness and obfuscation (of identity or intent or most anything else).

@opensuse.org email aliases are available to members of the project -- so, some people may wish to also send mail that is from that alias. Unfortunately, we don't at this time provide SMTP service, thus some members may have issues sending mail from those addresses. OK. Then the premise for the snide comment from Marco Michna and my attempt to explain it don't really obtain. But if you're going to create the notion of an official membership for the openSUSE project, then you really should, at a minimum, provide an SMTP server for those members to use to send mail in their capacity as project members.

Here's how I send email, and others may have other ways, but it works for
me:
When your preferred email client gives you the option of typing your
address, simply type in your given @opensuse.org address. Then set that
email up to go out through the SMTP option of your choice (mine is through
my ISP's SMTP server), and use your existing ISP email account info.

Yes, that's the problem (sorry for not explaining this in my first e-mail). I was actually assuming that this (rejecting other FROM addresses) would be default with most SMTP servers. Anyway, it certainly doesn't work with my provider ...

I thought so. None of the providers in Spain that I know of allow this. None. So, gmail is a blessing...

Right. I'm sending you an "invite". There, go to "settings", "Accounts", "Send mail as", and "Add another email address". Of course, before that, learn how to configure pop or imap, and smtp sending with your new gmail address, get it working, and then configure it for your o.o alias. There are a number of organizations that provide an email alias for members or users, and no smtp server. For example, "sourceforge", or the "ieee". This is quite common. Thanks for all the replies. They prompted me to re-assess my assumption about alien FROM addresses not getting accepted by most SMTP servers (which is true for the SMTP server of web.de, which I use by default). It turns out that one of the SMTP servers that I have access to does actually accept me sending with the opensuse.org sender address. So I'm fine. Greetings from Bremen hartmut
