[opensuse-project] netcdf static libraries opensuse
Hi, in my institute and many others around the world the libraries "libnetcdf" and "libnetcdff" are used in a regular basis. Since release 12.2, the static libraries are not included in the devel packages any more. It would be very helpful for the weather, climate and space community (among others) if you could provide the netcdf-devel-static package. Do you plan to include it in the future? It would be nice and practical to have the netcdf-devel-static package in an official repository. In the case of the close related "hdf5" package, it seems not to be any problem to provide the hdf5-devel-static in the Science repository. Could you please consider the possibility of providing a netcdf-devel-static package (including libnetcdf.a and libnetcdff.a) in a similar way (e.g. in Science repository)? It would make things much easier for us ... . Hi Sebastian, this one https://build.opensuse.org/package/show?package=netcdf&project=devel%3Alibraries%3Ac_c%2B%2B which is the dev repo for opensuse seems to offer the devel-static that shall contain what you want. are you sure you did not find it in the official repo? regards, Alin On Thu 18 Apr 2013 17:37:52 S. openSUSE 12.3 contains netcdf-devel-static - and looking at the changelog I see: Sun Jun 26 02:02:57 UTC 2011 - Added pkgconfig and fflags patches - Dropped libm patch fixed upstream - Fixed summary, license info, description - Created doc and static packages so, it should have been already available in 12.2. To search for the package run: zypper se netcdf-devel-static So, could you please double check that it's really not there for you... Hi Andreas, thanks for the reply! Indeed, you are right! Sorry that I didn't define well the problem. I have netcdf-devel-static package in both, 12.2 and 12.3. What I was missing is the "netcdff.a" library, which is not provided any longer. So, I compiled myself the netcdff library, (statically) linked, but the problem went on because the package netcdf-devel-static requires libcurl-devel-static (the libcurl.a library), and this is not provided. Again, I compiled and (statically) linked the "libcurl.a", but still plenty of undefined references showed up (related to ssl, md5, ldap, etc) ... . As a result, I didn't succeed to link to the netcdf library statically. In the previous opensuse releases this was not a problem. netcdf is a quite extended format used by thousands of users around the world and, in my modest opinion, it should be (easily) possible to link to this library statically. Sebastian, could you file a bug report following the instructions given at http://bugs.opensuse.org and tell me the bug number? That's the best way to move forward here. We are trying to use system versions of libraries is science repository. So we need a real reason for building new versions of netcfd and hdf5. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org
