Problems configuring the tape drive /dev/nst1
Hi. I've got SuSE 7.0 for PPC installed on my RS/6000 and I have a problem with my second tape drive. I'm not very skilled on Linux and I don't know how to install a new tape, but with the SuSE installation it is automaticaly. I can obtain information from the first tape by typing: mt -t /dev/nst0 status The second tape ( /dev/nst1) is an external scsi tape and when I try to get the tape status... mt -t /dev/nst1 status I get the following error: mt: /dev/nst1: Device not configured I don't know how to configure the device. I don't know if it is not configured because it doesn't work property or because I do have to configure it. Can anybody give me any advice or any website where I can get some help? Thanks in advance Jorge.
Maybe it is not recognized. Take a look at /proc/scsi/scsi: bash-2.03$ cat /proc/scsi/scsi Attached devices: Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 02 Lun: 00 Vendor: IOMEGA Model: BETA230 Rev: 2.02 Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02 Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 03 Lun: 00 Vendor: EXABYTE Model: EXB-8500 ET5 Rev: 06X0 Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02 Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 04 Lun: 00 Vendor: MATSHITA Model: CD-R CW-7503 Rev: 1.06 Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02 Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 05 Lun: 00 Vendor: IOMEGA Model: ZIP 100 Rev: N*32 Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02 Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 06 Lun: 00 Vendor: FUJITSU Model: M2513EL Rev: 0030 Type: Optical Device ANSI SCSI revision: 02 Is is listed there? I guess it's not recognized. In /proc/scsi/scsi there is only one 'Sequential-Access' device (nst0), but there isn't the second tape. If I execute dmesg it seems that the system only detects one of the two tapes. On the back of the external tape drive there is a button to change the IRQ number. Now there is a number 6. Here I attach my /proc/scsi/scsi file and the output of dmesg: ----------------8<------------------------8<----------------------8<------------------------8<---------------------- Attached devices: Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00 Vendor: IBM Model: DGHS09U Rev: 0370 Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 03 Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 01 Lun: 00 Vendor: IBM Model: DGHS Rev: 0370 Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 03 Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 02 Lun: 00 Vendor: ARCHIVE Model: IBM-STD224000N!D Rev: 726B Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02 Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 03 Lun: 00 Vendor: IBM Model: CDRM00203 !K Rev: 1_00 Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02 ----------------8<------------------------8<----------------------8<------------------------8<---------------------- device tree used 33120 bytes No RTAS service called display-character No RTAS service called display-character No RTAS service called display-character No RTAS service called display-character No RTAS service called display-character No RTAS service called display-character No RTAS service called display-character No RTAS service called display-character No RTAS service called display-character No RTAS service called display-character No RTAS service called display-character No RTAS service called display-character No RTAS service called display-character No RTAS service called display-character No RTAS service called display-character No RTAS service called display-character No RTAS service called display-character No RTAS service called display-character Total memory = 512MB; using 2048kB for hash table (at c0600000) Linux version 2.2.16 (root@CHRP.suse.de) (gcc version 2.95.3 19991030 (prerelease/franzo/20000625)) #1 Thu Oct 5 01:30:44 GMT 2000 Boot arguments: root=/dev/sda3 OF CTG0 OF CTG0 Warning: no mac-io found PCI buses 0..1 controlled by pci at 80000000 RTAS Event Scan Rate: 1 (2999 jiffies) OpenPIC Version 1.0 (4 CPUs and 16 IRQ sources) at f8ec0000 OpenPIC timer frequency is not set time_init: decrementer frequency = 1246848720/60 Console: colour dummy device 80x25 Calibrating delay loop... 249.04 BogoMIPS Memory: 513724k available (1688k kernel code, 8600k data, 168k init) [c0000000,e0000000] Dentry hash table entries: 65536 (order 7, 512k) Buffer cache hash table entries: 524288 (order 9, 2048k) Page cache hash table entries: 131072 (order 7, 512k) VFS: Diskquotas version dquot_6.4.0 initialized POSIX conformance testing by UNIFIX PCI: Probing PCI hardware Warning: no ADB interface detected pmac nvram is core99: 0 Don't know how to access NVRAM with 4 addresses Linux NET4.0 for Linux 2.2 Based upon Swansea University Computer Society NET3.039 NET4: Unix domain sockets 1.0 for Linux NET4.0. That's not the IRQ - it's the SCSI ID. Still don't see any reference to the device. Has it been powered down since you changed the ID, and the whole system rebooted? Is it the only external device? How about your termination - if it's the only external, you should be terminated at that point, not at the SCSI card. Otherwise, terminate at the last external device. What is the manufacturer/model? Finally, does MacOS see it? Stew Benedict
