Fwd: GXT2000p adapter + suse 7.1
Hi experts, yesterday I read in Suse support DB that there is a new adapter supported in IBM RS/6k env. It seems that it is necessary to have a recent kernel (2.4.6 ) and an openfirmware driver : I suppose it means I have to download the latest microcode for the workstation I want to install. The URL is http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/olh_ppc_hardware_ibm.html (this is the whole line of info): GXT 2000P (requires kernel 2.4.6 and newer, OpenFirmware driver) Is there someone who can kindly suggest me how to configure the last kernel in order to have the support for this adapter? ( for example if I have to activate fb for MATROX (???) or else...) or better if is there a precompiled kernel I can download? And what is exactly an openfirmware driver? Thanks in advance and best regards Alberto bat21@libero.it -------------------------------------------------------

You can find the latest kernels here: /mirror/SuSE/ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/kernel/BETA/ You dont need a special OF update, the driver is already active. That "requires kernel 2.4.6 and newer" means that someone fixed the color palette for X. You should use Mode "default" instead of Mode "1024x768" or whatever you have in the XF86config. Mr. Hering, thank you for your prompt answer. I'll try your suggestions on a workstation with this graphic adapter when I'll be back from vacations. Now I have another related question. In my office on my table I have an old RS/6k 43p-140+ gxt2000p and i would like to install on it SUSE 7.1 using the graph. adapter. I read in SUSE sdb ( http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/olh_ppc_43p140.html) that there is a special kernel to boot this box but it is a 2.4.2 so I suppose this kernel does not support my graphic adapter. I tried to download from ...SuSE/ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/kernel/BETA/ a version of PREP recent kernel , (this: http://www.mirror.ac.uk/sites/ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/update/BETA/kernel/d...) I copied it on a dos diskette and I followed the instruction in sdb to boot the 43p-140 but the boot failed (the kernel was able to print some messages on the screen in the openboot environment (white background). Probably I need a 43p-140 patched 2.4.6 kernel but SUSE 43p patch ( http://www.mirror.ac.uk/sites/ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/7.1/unsorted/prep/43...) is against 242.... In your opinion can I try to apply this patch to a recent kernel? Or (better for me) it will be possible to have an upgraded prep 140 kernel at the right level (supporting GXT2000p) in the BETA kernel SUSE ftp directory? Many thanks in advance and best regards Alberto bat21@libero.it On Monday 06 August 2001 19:35, you wrote:
