Yes. What's wrong ?
The tutorial is aimed at someone with a CD-ROM. You don't use CDRECORD for DVD. Try: dvd+rw-format -force /dev/hdc pktsetup pktcdvd0 /dev/hdc mkudffs --media-type=dvd --udfrev=0x0150 /dev/pktcdvd/pktcdvd0 mount -t udf -o rw,noatime /dev/pktcdvd/pktcdvd0 /media/dvdrw ... change /dev/hdc to whatever the drive is actually at and /media/dvdrw to whatever the mount point ultimately should be. This one tripped me up, too. -- --Michel Vaillancourt Wolfstar Systems www.wolfstar.ca

Yes, it's a DVD burner.
But I use a CD-RW in it.
And dvd-rw-format fails since it's not a DVD :
dvd+rw-format -force /dev/hdc

, version 4.10. :-( mounted media doesn't appear to be DVD±RW or DVD-RAM I can't format a UDF CD-RW on a DVD burner ? Should I use a CD burner to format a udf CD-RW ?
Cheers,
I would suggest yes. cdrecord will always fink out on you, that I know of Maybe someone else knows a trick to it that I don't. -- --Michel Vaillancourt Wolfstar Systems www.wolfstar.ca

About that, some thougts, the spin speed of the DVD is many times low than a CD, cause the density of the disc, then if your drive spins 1 time with a DVD, reads about 7 times more data than on a CD, if you try to get the same speed on a DVD-BURNER, the spin of the motor should go terribly faster, and in several cases you are wasting the mechanics and life of the Unit.
Then, even you didn't care about the price of the unit, or you can buy one whenever you want, I suggest to you to buy a CD-RW burner. :) -- Gustavo Guillermo Pérez Compunauta uLinux www.compunauta.com

Hi, It seems that you two are right. :-) The good news is that my DVD burner works fine, because I can format udf DVD+RW on it. The bad is that I have to buy a CD burner, yes (but it costs not much). Thanks a lot. Cheers, -- Fred.

However, my udf DVD+RW seems to be formated in utf-8. Is it possible to format it in iso-8859-15 for example ? I RTFM of mkudffs but I did not see anything related to it. Any suggestion ? Cheers, -- Fred.

It's probably how it's mounted, not how it was formatted. Investigate the mount options mechanism on your Linux, man mount, iocharset I think. Volker -- Volker Kuhlmann is list0570 with the domain in header http://volker.dnsalias.net/ Please do not CC list postings to me.

Yes, I read it too. But with iocharset=iso8859-15 or iso8859-1, it displays a lot of strange chars /bin/ls: /mnt/dvdudf/Licence-Maoctave\206\303\367\b\276\177\365\a_@f1\365@\246\031\300\b\276\177\365k \025\300\244\210\303\3674\206\303\367d\211\303\367\001_Tf1\365\002_\034\306I\366\364\206\303\367\364\206\303\367a\222\031\300_\002_\244\301I\366d\211\303\367d\211\303\367a\222\031\300_\244\301I\366d\211\303\367M!\025\300\210\002_\243_\342oU\371(\037\345\364_\b_\030?\346\364\300\:\256\303\a\200_\020_\354\243\342\364\354\243\342\364\a\200_\213\352\030\300\300\:\256\303\a\200_\370\364\367\307\377\005\b_\360\v\034\300\307\377\005\b\334=\346\364\005_\264\377\005\b_\372\035\026\300\307\377\005\b\334=\346\364\005_dise#660E: No such file or directory :-( -- Fred.

Because I don't like utf8. Not so easy to install/configure on my sarge. What do you suggest ? I did not really understand :) I really want to have iso8859-15 nls on my CD/DVD. PS : buying a CD burner has fixed the issue, in fact. Thanks to all. -- Fred.
I've been a bit busy lately to dig them up but I have some patches to udftools that fix cdrwtool to use standards compliant CCBs to format the disk. I had to make these changes when my old cd/dvd combo drive crapped out and the new one didn't like cdrwtool. I spent some time looking into it and found that the CCBs were not as the standards said they should be, so I am not sure why it seems to work for most cd-rws and some older cd/dvd combo drives. In any case, I'll see if I can't dig them up and post them. It might allow you to return that cd-rw drive and use your existing dvd combo. fred wrote:

format works fine. Sorry for the noise. Cheers, -- Fred.
