Dear All I have just installed Linux UDF. However, after cdrwtool -d /dev/hdc -q when I run pktsetup /dev/pktcdvd0 /dev/cdrom I get the following: "open packet device: No such device or address" Any ideas? (My computer runs Mandrake 10.) Thanks in advance, Paul
We've had this just yesterday. Please read the mailing list archives.

Dear All
I have just installed Linux UDF. However, after
cdrwtool -d /dev/hdc -q
when I run
pktsetup /dev/pktcdvd0 /dev/cdrom
I get the following:
"open packet device: No such device or address"
Any ideas? (My computer runs Mandrake 10.)
Thanks in advance,
Paul

I have just read the mailing list archives and I do not find any discussion about a problem like the one I reported.
Your problem might be due to lack of packet writing patch, like in the
thread "problem on debian sarge + kernel 2.6.1 bad ioctl". But then, it
might be not.
Logs? Kernel version? You could try 2.6.8.

He's saying, to put it bluntly, your looking at his replies, but your not READING them. Go to http://lists.suse.com/archive/packet-writing/ and browse - the messages too, not just the subject line. All the information you need is here, or google your question. If, after a little homework, you still cannot find the answer, post it here. I can recommend upgradeing your kernel to 2.6.8.1 (this is a patched 2.6.8) http://www.kernel.org. ps. yes, you need to patch your kernels /Carl On Thursday 14 October 2004 11:08, Paul Smith wrote:

What do you mean by RTFM?

Thanks, Carl, for your constructive reply. Sometimes, for a novice like me, it is very complicated to follow very technical discussions. (The referred discussion does not address the same problem that I reported, at least in the mind of a novice like me.) Reading mailing lists archives cannot replace the role of a good documentation (or FAQ), which is missing regarding Linux UDF. Furthermore, my question asked for a "yes or no" answer, which is as quick to type as typing "RTFM!". Paul
