Well, I tried packet writing on my CD-RW drive (an IDE Yamaha CRW3200E, rev. 1.0d). It supports Mt. Rainier packet writing, so I tried the new and shiny cdmrw patch (specifically I tried to cp -a my 200Mb $HOME across). It seemed to work, although the writing pattern was odd; a hundred or so files would get transferred, then there'd be a long pause, the drive spinning up and down, flicking between reading and writing states --- but it copied. Then I tried to umount, and that failure mode restarted; spin-up, two second pause with the writing light on, spin-down, flicker of reading light, repeat. I left it overnight; in the morning it was still doing this. umount went into D state, blocked in get_request_wait(). In the end I was forced to reboot, because sync(1) was blocking in the same state, too :( Well, Mt. Rainier support is quite new, perhaps it doesn't work right. So I tried the packet-writing patch (against 2.4.21). Same symptoms; umount stalls forever, drive spins up and down endlessly. Anyone seen these symptoms before? Any idea what's going wrong? Is there any more data I can gather? I know that ordinary non-packet writing works fine on this drive (via ide-scsi), so the drive itself is presumably vaguely functional. -- `It is an unfortunate coincidence that the date locarchive.h was written (in hex) matches Ritchie's birthday (in octal).' -- Roland McGrath on the libc-alpha list

Where did you find cdmrw patch? Thanks, Ljubo

ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/axboe/patches/v2.4/2.4.19-pre4/cd-mrw-2.gz but this is unlikely to be the (sole) cause, because it happens with the non- Mount-Rainier patch too :( -- `It is an unfortunate coincidence that the date locarchive.h was written (in hex) matches Ritchie's birthday (in octal).' -- Roland McGrath on the libc-alpha list
