Can't get packet-writing working
Hi, I'm trying for a month now, but with no success. First I tried with a patch for Mandrake8.2 which was made by Peter Osterlund when I asked for - Thanks :o) Now I installed RedHat7.3 and used a 2.4.19-rc1-kernel from kernel.org which was patched by me with packetcd-2.4.19-pre4-patch. I compiled both kernels with packetcd and UDF (writing enabled) as module. Then I installed UDF-Tools 1.0.2b (./configure - make - make install). Did a modprobe -v pktcdvd. When I tried 'cdrwtool -d /dev/scd0 -q' (using IDE-SCSI, trying with a CD-RW and a DVD-RW) I got the following message: ---------------- snip ------------------------------------------------ [root@echelon root]# cdrwtool -d /dev/scd0 -q using device /dev/scd0 1238KB internal buffer setting write speed to 12x wait_cmd: Invalid argument Command failed: 55 10 00 00 00 00 00 00 3c 00 00 00 - sense 05.26.00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 05 32 20 27 0a 00 00 00 20 00 00 00 00 20 00 96 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 08 00 mode_select: Illegal seek set_write [root@echelon root]# --------------- snap -------------------------------------------------- DMESG of the cdrwtool-command: -------------- snip --------------------------------------------------- cdrom: This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize! sr0: CDROM (ioctl) reports ILLEGAL REQUEST. -------------- snap --------------------------------------------------- Trying mkuffs has the following result (independent wether pktsetup is set or not) and doesn't create any DMESG: ---------------- snip ------------------------------------------------- [root@echelon root]# mkudffs --media-type=cdrw /dev/pktcdvd0 trying to change type of multiple extents [root@echelon root]# --------------- snap -------------------------------------------------- DMESG of 'pktsetup /dev/pktcdvd0 /dev/scd0': -------------- snip --------------------------------------------------- cdrom: This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize! pktcdvd: writer sr0 sucessfully registered -------------- snap --------------------------------------------------- Is 'sr0' right? I've put my old SCSI-CD-R(W) (Sony CRX-140S-RP 8x/4x/32x) into my server to test it. I works well with the same CD-RW, but it's slow (approximately 90 Kbyte/s). I think the problem is initializing with cdrwtool. Probably the PIONEER DVR-A03 does not support quick-format by firmware but only by software (c't claims that problem solved with new DVR-A04). But I've read there'd be a firmware-update, which seems to be quite unstable. I'm going to check that. Rene Am Fre, 2002-07-05 um 22.46 schrieb Pere Pujal Carabantes:

I just initialized a CD-RW with cdrwtool on my old SCSI-writer and put it into the DVR-A03 - it worked now! So it's just that lack of firmware-support for quickformat. Is there any way to do a full, non-firmware-based initialize with cdrwtool? Rene Am Fre, 2002-07-05 um 23.02 schrieb Rene Bartsch:

once i did a format by "hand", executing cdrwtool -d /dev/sr0 -b to blank the disk, then used -m option with the size i wish of the track in sectors to format, and finally i used mkudffs /dev/sr0 (or mke2fs or another filesystem) This because my old cdwriter doesn't detect the right size of the disks. cdrwtool --help --help d device s set write parameters g get write parameters b blank cdrw disc m format cdrw disc u run mkudffs on track v set mkudffs version t set cd writing speed p write fixed packets q perform quick setup r reserve track c close track z fixed packet size l border/session setting w write type f file to write o start at this lba for file write i print detailed disc info On Fri, 2002-07-05 at 20:05, Rene Bartsch wrote:

Hi everybody, I've been trying (without any success, needless to say) to get a NEC NR-7700A to work in packet writing mode under Linux (kernel 2.4.18 sofar). I did a search of the Internet but couldn't come up with any useful information. Can anybody please tell me, whether I can hope for a breakthrough or is that drive not suitable (too old, no driver, wrong chipset,....). Cheers, Christian
Here's what I can tell you by looking at the error messages don't know if it helps. The driver failed trying to perform a MODE SELECT, which is basically the machine telling the CD drive what type of medium it expects in the drive and what parameters to associate with it. The problem your having is the driver is trying to set a parameter to a value outside a range supported by your drive. Without digging through the source code in detail its difficult tell which parameter it is as each drive has many different "pages" of parameters and the current page is selected by previous command, not shown in your debug output. The only other thing was did you have a cd-rw disc in the drive when you did the cdrwtool command? -- I don't want to sell you any death sticks... I think I'll go home and rethink my life...
