Hi folks, as I'm new to this list I don't know wheter it's the right list for my purpose. I'm searching for information about backing up data on DVD +R/RW disc. Can anyone provide me links or docs regarding this topic? Thx a lot for your patience. Felix

Strictly speaking no since DVD+R/RW doesn't use packet writing. But there doesn't seem to be a better place to discuss this. Others (including myself) have used this list for DVD+R/RW discussion as well.

DVD+R/RW kernel patches, tools and instructions: http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/ And check the mailing list archives: http://lists.suse.com/archive/packet-writing/ -- Ville Syrjälä syrjala@sci.fi http://www.sci.fi/~syrjala/
Well, I believe packet-writing is possible on DVD+R/W, but to my understanding, packet-writing with UDF limits the amount of data you can backup significantly. For example, 700MB cd becomes 576MB. If you are just trying to backup, you can do this with UDF by creating a UDF fs on your system and then writing it to the DVD+R with cdrecord just as you would an iso. I think you would also use dvdrecord. -Leo http://www.serverdown.dhs.org On Wed, 2002-10-02 at 08:25, Ville Syrjälä wrote:

No. DVD+R/RW is a random write access media which means that it is used like a hard disk. DVD-R/RW works like current CD-R/RW (hence the name). DVD-RAM is used like DVD+R/RW but DVD-RAM is physically incompatible with DVD-ROM whereas DVD+R/RW was designed with compatibility in mind. -- Ville Syrjälä syrjala@sci.fi http://www.sci.fi/~syrjala/

I don't understand how this means that you can't use packet-writing to a dvd+rw. -Leo

It simply doesn't support packet writing. And why should it? -- Ville Syrjälä syrjala@sci.fi http://www.sci.fi/~syrjala/

what do you exactly mean by that it doesn't support packet writing? i'm running a HP 200j with DVD+RWs using UDF, and it works fine. gustavo

You don't need pktcdvd.o

The filesystem used has nothing to do with packet writing. -- Ville Syrjälä syrjala@sci.fi http://www.sci.fi/~syrjala/
