[opensuse-packaging] Do we really need the gpm package (general purpose mouse for console)
Does it still make sense to ship this package and compile our packages against it or should it get dropped? It's build required by the following packages: aalib brltty dialog installation-images loki_setup xemacs emacs ncurses vim mc and thus gets installed on each and every system. -- Andreas Jaeger, Program Manager openSUSE, aj@{novell.com,opensuse.org} Twitter: jaegerandi | Identica: jaegerandi SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+help@opensuse.org

Don't drop it! gmp is the only way to get mouse support when not running X and I'd say there are a number of reasons why you don't have/want X. Philipp -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+help@opensuse.org

Like a batch of servers on a keyboard/mouse/monitor switch. Or the old little one in the broom closet, or ... For sure, the gpm could stand a rewrite to better emulate keyboard events which would greatly reduce the need for compile depenencies. But as it is atm I see no way to remove gpm without significant loss of functionality on non-X systems. - Well, may be a NEW shiny, sleek, no-overhead X12 could provide a bare-metal input-module that could be used even without the rest of X? ;-> No, for real, there is no other way at this moment. I've tried since 1996 to reduce the dependencies on gpm, while improving gpm to provide better emulation, but hey, tar (natural, not tape-archivier) moves faster. Cheers Michael Förster aka Yamaban

Note that libgpm is not only useful on the Linux console in connection with the gpm daemon but also provides transparent mouse support for applications running in xterm. cu Ludwig -- (o_ Ludwig Nussel //\ V_/_ http://www.suse.de/ SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nuernberg) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+help@opensuse.org

Ok, I'm not dropping it. I've heard enough reasons to keep it ;) I've now checked the requirements and removed it where it's not needed at all - and split up a devel package. Btw. we still have 1.20.1 and 1.20.6 is out. If any of you heavy gpm users want to update and test, this would be appreciated, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, Program Manager openSUSE, aj@{novell.com,opensuse.org} Twitter: jaegerandi | Identica: jaegerandi SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+help@opensuse.org

It's going to be quite a bit of work as the code got heavily restructured but I'm giving it a try. Philipp -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+help@opensuse.org

And it's done! Anybody that want's to test gpm-1.2.6 take it from Base:System. Philipp -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+help@opensuse.org
