Speed problems with ASUS laptop
Hi, I have terrible speed problems with my ASUS computer, running an AMD ATHLON XP-M 2600 processor. I first suspected faulty SWAP memory, but this seems to work ok now. Is it possible I run the wrong kernel? When checking for the kernel, I get the result below. This really is a grave problem for me, so if anyone has a hint I would really appreciate it. Cheers Peter peter@thar:~> uname -a Linux thar 2.6.5-7.108-default #1 Wed Aug 25 13:34:40 UTC 2004 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux peter@thar:~> -- ====================================================== Peter Franz, Dipl.Phys. Danke! Peter Patrick Nagel wrote:

Schau mal unter YaST / Powermanagement. Vielleicht ist "Maximal Stromsparen" eingestellt. Peter Franz schrieb:

This is how it looks when the cpu have been downthrottled (assumingly because you did not really need it for a while). The frequency _ought_ to automatically rise, once you start putting pressure on the cpu. Appearently, it does not! I would guess that you might have two reasons for this 1) somewhere (see other post), the system have been configured to "never let the frequency go above 400mhz" 2) The automatic throttling/dethrothling does not work. I would start by looking at 1), using the hint in the other post (look at yast2/system/power managemant). I am using the scheme "powersave" (which works like at charm btw in battery mode and "maximal performance" in non-battery mode. When I look at the scheme for "powersave", the choices for "CPU" (the second window) are "Dynamic frequency scaling" with "Allow Throttling" marked (and a max % of 50). The "maximal performance" setting are "Dynamic frequency scaling" with NO mark in "Allow Throttling". These are factory defaults btw. I have an Asus M3000NP with an Intel Pentium M in the Centrino setup using the 2.6.5-7.104-default kernel (the previous version), and the powersave/speed modes works like a charm (better than in XP, with Asus' own performance script). If you have similar settings I would guess that there are problems with your cpu and the kernel. Perhaps it can be solved by doing a manual upgrading of the kernel, but I really have no idea of that. Hi, thanks, the problem has been solved: I installed a newer version of cpufreqd from the tarball. This created a correct cpufreqd.conf file. Cheers Peter Kasper Daniel Hansen wrote:

wenn das eine 9.1 ist, wird die CPU-Frequenz vom powersaved geregelt, nicht vom cpufreqd. Ansonsten: wir brauchen mehr Informationen als "es geht nicht". -- Stefan Seyfried
