[opensuse-marketing] writing opportunities
Hi all, I need some creativity from you all. I've been asked by the UK linuxuser magazine people if I know anyone who could write technical tutorials (eg installing a L.i.f.e thin-client setup) of about 2000 words for them. There might be some payment but that's not a given - they have to eat too. So, we must have people in our community who, maybe with some writing help from us, could do this. How do we contact them? Does anyone have any ideas? I could obviously blog, or ask on -project, but I would like to hear your thoughs too. And if any of you would be willing to work with a techie on such an article, doing some editing and working on wording etc, step up now :D Cheers, Jos

Maybe need to poll a cross-section of developers and users and find
out where their preferred points of contact are. IRC? A media mail
list?
What's happening with Pavol's social networking platform? I find the
idea of some kind of in-house unified platform really appealing.
Rather than having a bit on IRC, a bit on Facebook, and a dozen lists,
if I had suseCafe open and it was all there in one place....
I'm happy to edit anyone's tech articles for English and grammar. Feel
free to pass on my email.
cheers

Well, I think developers can be best contacted on -project, at least I hope most devs are there. Unfortunately there have been some severe flamewars in the past and many might have left - we need, at some point, start a campaign to get them back in (and do something about the flamewars at the same time).

It would be even cooler if it would integrate all that stuff - having to tweet, dent, digg, like etc can be tiring :D There are of course tools and connections between all our stuff but it'd be a nice addition. Unfortunatly I managed to miss Pavol's presentation at the oSC and I bet he hates me now.

This is one of the priorities we discussed last week at our BoF and we really need to go out into the community and over a long period of time seek out qualified folks who can write succh articles. For starters, I would suggest we go ahead and post on the -project mailing list. There's plenty of people there whith hidden talents to write that aren't making themselves known yet. And later down the line, we can look at other places, including even the support mailing list and forums, which most of us aren't on but those folks certainly see enough "repetition of material" to come forth and write a few articles of their own. Not just for this magazine, but for many other publications as well. Let's get that Writer's Army going! :-) Bryen

I'm sorry i missed the BoF, it clashed with the appstore one, but i beg to disagree. Basically I think the openSUSE Marketing team needs to transition from an "call for action/organizing" to a "action" team. I also think, given the recent months, you're already half-way there. We need you guys to step up and make it happen. That means that with this opportunity to market openSUSE you need to come up with a prioritized list of things to write about (things YOU deem important) and then go ahead (individuals or as team) and write them. If you in the course of writing them need input or technical help you approach experts directly or ask specific things on the appropriate mailinglist/forum/whatever. The recent months have shown that to make blogposts, articles or announcements happen it needs the marketing team to take care of this and the success has shown that you are more than capable to deliver great media. I would like to strongly encourage you to explore this direction further! Henne P.S. Honestly, I don't think what you said is a disagreement but rather an agreement. :-) The point of my statement was that part of the team building includes recruiting people to join the marketing team as writers. And we've got some good folks already. Not many in the team currently have article writing skills, though I have always felt that deep down, everyone has the skills, they just haven't seen it in themselves yet. :-) Thus far, our marketing team has been one that is based on people coming to the team and saying "I wanna do...." And there's more out there that we can reach out to and say "You can do..." I once again re-iterate that everyone is a marketer, they just don't know it yet. :-) We need more writers. Plain and simple. We need to go beyond just the wait until someone comes by mentality we've been doing so far. Guys, I love to be part of the team. I really enjoyed the chance I got this summer. My problem is topic. If there is to be a team of writers, please add my name. I work great when someone says here the topic and here is when it needed by. If it left up to me, I am bad to roam. Trust me I am working on 100 personal projects. I am trying to do more with my blog so that I can get more experience. I agree with Henne, we tend to be more talk than action on something. -- ----------------------------------------- Discover it! Point is that there was/is no specific request, other than several people asking me for articles about openSUSE. I've had requests from linux.com, LWN, linuxjournal and others already - so as Henne said, we need to push this. As Bryen said - we need writers for that. Some have signed up already, so next step is to come up with a list of topics we want to cover and get writing on them. So, let's brainstorm. First would be L.i.f.e stuff: thin client server setup; other things? Then, I'd love to see something like 'zypper insights' or 'the darker secrets of zypper'. As a FYI, it seems there is some misunderstanding around my mail - sorry for the sloppy wording: The writing is for an UK magazine. You can demand at least a subscription for half a year or something if you write for them :D As a matter of fact I will be writing a column for them and they want to feature openSUSE tutorials (and other articles!) in general - LIFE was just an example. Note that they are not the only ones seeking such input: I know of many magazines and sites where articles would get a decent spot. So anyone who enjoys writing, let me know and I hook you up. You should have noticed already know Helen South wrote a cool article on linux.com: http://www.linux.com/component/content/article/81-applications/372958- collaboration-across-borders-at-the-opensuse-conference And there is surely room for more articles on their site ;-) Cheers, Jos
