I'd like us to think about XMPP/Jabber. I know we briefly discussed it in -project (at least Pascal, Stephan, a few others & myself did). To summarise the discussion we had, it was decided that having a medium available with no-one present was pointless and counter productive. One big advantage that XMPP has is thatt corporate firewalls are more likely to allow the traffic through where as IRC is blocked by default. It is also possible to bridge between XMPP & IRC thus giving people a way of joining the regular medium. Personally I like XMPP, but it should only really be used if there is enough demand. Knowing what the preferred medium is in different regions is key. It maybe that one method is preferred in a particular region but not in others. This isn't necessarily ideal but will need looking into as to why (cultural etc). I can setup a poll today to see what people think if tou like? Something we lack presence in most other areas of openSUSE Community. 2) Digg We would like to set up a monthly Digg party where we gather up good and useful articles and everyone diggs those articles. If we can find a method to spread the word to digg a list of articles (not just any openSUSE articles, but good and relevant ones) then we can boost our presence on the web and in google searches. 3) Wiki I will be creating a wiki page that will gather all this information in the next day before our next meeting. 4) Blogging tips We will create a new page that provides advice to our community for how to increase traffic to their sites. Effective plugins that help, tips and tricks, information about SEO, etc. This one could be a bit of a challenge and anyone who has ideas about SEO, please step up and offer your advice. 5) Other areas to look into: Twitter, Laconica/identi.ca, dzone.com, LinkedIn. Any others to suggest? What about social networking services in non-English speaking regions? What can we tap into there? And should we appoint a "guru" for each of the different services? Someone who can study and understand and provide guidance to the rest of the marketing team about a particular service? It is very difficult for any one of us to become experts on all services, but if we divide and conquer :-), we could cover a lot more ground. Maybe it was not clear that I (and I guess most other) use Jabber only for instant messaging - not for group chats. So not as support forum. :-) The only benefits in having an own Jabber server I see is that the project would be seen as supporting open source instant messaging and could offer @opensuse.org IDs (as member benefit) analog to email forward/IRC cloak. Just my thoughts on this before we poll:
* What problem does this solve that we need to address right now?
I see one thing: Corporate firewalls are a problem for potential
participants who might be able to connect via Jabber. The counter to
this is that there are other services that can do the same thing, and
I *think there are probably free Jabber servers with IRC connectors
that are available already. So, would we be better off just pointing
people to those?
Some people don't like IRC but use Jabber. What's our net in terms of
additional participants here?
* Do we have someone to administer this and actual hardware to run it?
Right now, we're still working out kinks in our "official"
infrastructure, I'm not sure adding Jabber to the mix w/in the next
six months is advisable.
* Does this stack up higher than other problems we have on our plate?
I'd say probably not, though it's a good idea. My vote would be to put
this on the wiki as a future action item to tackle when we have other
project infrastructure issues solved. Other thoughts?

It is also possible to bridge between XMPP & IRC thus giving people a way of joining the regular medium.
Corporate firewalls tend to adapt to restrict the choices of how employees spend their hours. IRC is more or less universally banned, but the larger corporations ban just about everything that has the potential to waste peoples' time or expose the corporate IT infrastructure to threats. So while there may be a temporary advantage to XMPP, I wouldn't count on it staying that way. Nor would I expect corporate policies to suddenly reverse direction and become more forgiving of non-corporate-goal-seeking behavior. :) -- M.
