I gave my presentation at 3 p.m on Saturday to an audience of about 50. Told them there'd be a quiz at the end with prizes, so they paid close attention :-) I tossed a half-dozen stuffed Novell Tuxes and openSUSE geckos out to the persons answering the questions properly - that was a crowd-pleaser :-D Thanks for donating them! The crowd was very engaged, and asked lots of good questions (I think we're way past the 'dumb' questions about Linux) At 5 p.m. Saturday I met with Kevin and Jason on the Expo floor. We moved all the stuff into the booth from my SUV and set it up. We had the SCALE banner on a rented pipe & drape, three easels with posters about Linux (with the SCALE logo at the top of each poster, and an openSUSE logo at the bottom of the "Linux Installations done here!" poster). I also used a projector slaved off of one of our laptops so we could show visitors various aspects of the Linux desktop. We laid out openSUSE DVDs and the handouts and swag we had on the tables. The booth looked as good as any there, and better than the majority. We had a steady stream of interested visitors past the booth. The majority of the 200 attendees there must have come by the booth. By my count we gave away 160 openSUSE 11.4 DVDs, and about as many of our FOSS informational handouts. I also chatted up a couple of PC club newsletter editors, who took notes. We did three successful dual-boot laptop installs, one unsuccessful (damaged NTFS partition, Jason thinks) - but sent that owner away with instructions. We were warned about another visitor to the booth with a non-booting Windows laptop - a high-maintenance, demanding user. We turned that one over to Kevin, and by booting a Live CD, he was able to fully recover all her data, transfer it to her thumb drive, and also determine that the hard disc was failing. So we sent her away fairly happy. I also helped one guy that had his Ubuntu repository config dorked up slightly. I wound up with invitations to present at a couple of other clubs. One's in Claremont, California. The other is in Sun City, Arizona, at the big retirement community there. Their club president told me that they have 2200 members (!) and that 1500 of them have switched to Linux (?!) If he emails me, I'm going to verify that, 'cause if it's true, it's a huge win for Linux on the desktop, and deserves a write-up. I've also had a request to do a repeat Installfest for the Napa (California) PC club the next time I go up there. I've posted some photos on the SCALE page on FB. If that doesn't work for you, let me know and I'll email a couple. Note that while 200 does not seem like a lot of people at a software conference, all of the attendees are officials from PC (Windows) clubs in the United States. They take what they've learned at SWCC back to their clubs and talk about it. So there's lots of opportunity for FOSS leverage here :-D Thanks for assisting with this, guys - it was fun for everyone involved, and we (FOSS generally, and SCALE and openSUSE specifically ) got a LOT of positive attention from everyone there. Dear marketeers, For those among us (esp our ambassadors) who frequently talk to people about openSUSE, I have drafted up three elevator pitches for respectively beginner, advanced and pro linux users to explain to them why THEY should check out openSUSE. [opensuse-marketing] Event Wrapup: LFNW 2011

Ah LinuxFest... when the Northwest American geek can be seen herding in their native habitat... ;-) LinuxFest Northwest 2011, held Saturday April 30 & Sunday May 1st, 2011 in (beautiful) Bellingham, WA, was a HUGE success: * >400 DVDs distributed * $585 raised for LFNW * >300 viewers for our live presentations I learned a few things, having run a booth in the past at LFNW, and I'm quite proud of the results. (1) Working closely with the coordinators pays off triple. LFNW typically charges $600 for a booth space, allotting only 6' "Science Fair" tables for free projects. We brought them an offer, with a local company donating $200, and offering to sell t-shirts to raise the balance (yes, I STOLE THIS FROM SCaLE). I know its not a sustainable practice, but Novell's event staff was quite happy to unload the "Sponsored by Novell" openSUSE t-shirts to us, as this was the week of the Attachmate buyout. I made a point of emphasing repeatedly that we were taking LFNW seriously, that we wanted to "Go Big". As a result, I got more interest from the onganizational and volunteer staff: openSUSE was used as the basis for the "tutorium", where new users were being taught how to setup and use Linux - all the volunteers for that project were only taught how to do one distro: openSUSE; in the "game den" where Linux was being demonstrated as a viable gaming platform by running a 2-day long lan party, openSUSE and Pavol Rusnak's openSUSE game store ( http://gamestore.gk2.sk/ ) were the foundation; and when it came to setting up some PCs to do registration at the event, naturally we were there to help. So all in all, openSUSE *owned* LFNW! (2) Be smart about attracting audience. I had initially planned to design & print a poster to put up as many places around town as I could. Turns out, I printed up 15 full-glossy posters instead (thanks to Costco for cheap prints ) and carefully placed them: at local Tech shops for staff (even Best Buy was happy to put one up in their lunchroom), at tech hangouts (coffee shops located close to industry), and I talked a librarian into allowing me to hang one by the computers at the library instead of their general bulletin board. The rest went up around the event space, to draw eyeballs to us. Each poster has info on the booth, our presentations schedule, a splash about the t-shirt sales, and a link & QR code to the wiki for more/updated info. I can't count how many people mentioned seeing the posters, which was amazing and gratifying. (3) Hug your local podcaster. I worked with Jupiter Broadcasting, who we have a pretty good reputation with, to make sure they had a good presence at the show. In a fit of backscratching, they elected to broadcast one of our presentation on their live streams, along with their own. The SUSE Studio presentation had over 250 viewers online, in addition to the 25 - 30 in the room. (You'll have to ask Alan Clark or suseROCKS for details on their own session). The guys also asked to interview Alan Clark for their weekly video podcast, the Linux Action Show ( http://www.jupiterbroadcasting.com/7656/lfnw2011/ ) I've updated the wiki page ( http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:LinuxFestNorthwest2011 ) with a bit of content, links to presentation materials, and some photos. Hi @ll You might already be aware of the fact that openSUSE participates at the world IPv6 day (if not: now you are ;-) at 8 June 2011. My team and others are currently working hard to bring _every_ service up and running starting with this day (some are already done, but others need to follow). To be listed on http://isoc.org/wp/worldipv6day/, Phil Roberts from ISOC asks us if we can provide some webpage or a blog entry describing why IPv6 is important for us. It's optional, but I hope there's someone who can help us with this? A wiki page on http://en.opensuse.org would be absolutely ok. The ad will only be affective in the IT community which probably is interested and hence informed about openSUSE anyway. Publishing ads in newspapers might also reach another audience, which should be interesting for us too.
