Technisch ist Koreanisch eigentlich vollalfabetisch, nur das "Syllabendesign" gibt einen anderen Eindruck. Also, ist Hangeul fuer Suse 9.3 kein "Alfabet" mehr? (Nicht relevant, aber wissen Sie vielleicht, es gibt in Korea eine Statue fuer den Koenig (13. Jahrhundert glaube ich) der das Hangeul entworfen hat; die Leute in Korea sind ganz stolz darauf (sind sie zwar auf alles..). Hangeul zu lernen schafft man in einer Stunde. The command KDE tries to execute is: setxkbmap -model inspiron -layout ko This results in the error message: Error loading new keyboard description In older SuSE Linuxes, it did work, then with a KDE update, the korean keyboard layout disappeard completely from the list of available layouts in KDE (I think, that was in SuSE 9.2, but with an additional apt-Upgrade of KDE). Now the layout is back again, but it does not work. Mike: Do you know anything about it? I've seen, that there was recently a korean subject in the mailing list, but I did not read it. Was it about the same topic?

Yes, Hangeul is really genious, it's simple and it fits very well to the Korean (and only to the Korean) language.

Yes, similar to Indian or Semitic languages, Hangeul is alfabetical and only combined for reasons of beauty. Me too, I think languages like Korean (or Hindi or Arabian, but also Japanese Kana) do not need a special input method, they could easily be mapped on a normal keyboard. Unfortunately, actually I need SCIM / SKIM to enter Korean. But with this it works well. Arabian and Russian still work with the respective keyboard layout. Regards Marc

It's setxkbmap -model pc104 -layout ko on my SuSE Linux 9.3 machine, but this fails with the same message:

Apparently the Korean keyboard layout is missing xorg-x11 package in
SuSE Linux 9.3:

It's already missing in the sources, i.e. it is a bug
of X11R6.8.2, it has nothing to do with KDE.

Of course you could map the Jamo on a keyboard layout (and it is like
that on a Korean keyboard layout), but you still need an input method
to compose the Hangul from the Jamo.
For Japanese you need an input method of course as Kana only are not
enough for Japanese, you need Kanji as well.
