[opensuse-kernel] please set CONFIG_FW_LOADER_USER_HELPER=n in kernel HEAD
Hi: The userspace firmware loader in udev should not be called anymore, I just submitted a new udev package that disables the code but would be much better if this functionality is disabled in the kernel so it does not creeps back ever again. -- Cristian "I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody." -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+owner@opensuse.org

This would break dell_rbu driver that explicitly requires the firmware upload procedure over sysfs. Takashi -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+owner@opensuse.org

Why hasn't that driver been fixed yet? thanks, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+owner@opensuse.org

Well, the driver can't be "fixed". The update procedure with this driver is defined to use sysfs. Thus, we cannot change this interface at all as long as we keep the rule "don't break user-space". What we can fix instead is to provide the extra function like request_firmware_via_userhelper() and use it explicitly in such a driver. Ideally, we'd like to have the possibility to obsolete the user-space helper at all. So, we'd need split CONFIG_FW_LOADER_USER_HELPER to two: CONFIG_FW_LOADER_FALLBACK_USER_HELPER to be selectable by user, and CONFIG_FW_LOADER_USER_HELPER to be reverse-selected by the former and the driver that requires request_firmware_via_userhelper(). But whether yet new Kconfig is a good idea, it's not sure. That's the scenario Ming Lei and I discussed some time ago. Since then, no one has time to step in, as it's not that big matter.
