[opensuse-kernel] 3.0-rc7, pretty please?
Hi, can we get 3.0-rc7 in Kernel:HEAD soon? Because rc6 without ca5c485f55d326d9a23e4badd05890148aa53f74 and friends is pretty bad on USB after resume... And since USB is no longer a module, I cannot just rebuild the driver with a fix... the joy of monolithic kernels! :-) Thanks, -- Stefan Seyfried "Dispatch war rocket Ajax to bring back his body!" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+help@opensuse.org

Also note that rc6 completely breaks some 64bit systems see, https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=705085 combined with the fact that zypper now removes running kernel by default when doing a kernel update this results in an unbootable machine with no old kernel around. I did not experience any unexpected kernel uninstalls and I just installed 3.0 a few hours ago. Do you this in /etc/zypp/zypp.conf? multiversion = provides:multiversion(kernel) Note: I happened to install via Yast, so maybe there is a zypper only bug I didn't hit. That's hardly the only dumb distro or upstream default. First thing I do with any fresh install is fix dumb settings (e.g. upper cased keys in filenames and nicknames, like "_", " " & ":"; exit instead of summary in YaST; unthrottled keyboard repeat & delay; hidden boot messages; & of course, remove &/or rebuild the working initrd & kernel before the new has been tested to actually work), except if the universal fix tool (MC) isn't installed by default, in which case it's the second thing I do. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." *sigh* It is disabled because otherwise your harddisk will fill up overtime uncontrollably. There now is work on zypp to allow automatic deinstallation of older kernels when this option is enabled as far as I know. Hmm my problem is it removes _running_ kernel, it should be leaving at least one old kernel around, isn't that whats expected? I frequently install a second kernel, to provide a safe fallback. The disk space argument was said in SuSE days when online kernel update was first introduced, despite the install proposals of day discouraging disk partitioning, beyond swap space. Since with Online Kernel Update, I've actually lost system & had to repair it with Live CD & rpm, because at one time, it did not even check it could write in /boot, so you'ld have /lib/modules updated but not vmlinuz & initrd. Neat way to handle this, is to schedule a cron daily batch job to remove the previous kernel once the new has booted and is running, you know exactly which package you're updating and what kernel version SHOULD have succeeded. Disk space could be reserved by creating files with dd(1) filled from /dev/zero in /boot & /lib. Still remember fondly some old SuSE releases which provided, new and tried & tested kernel choices as a fallback in case of boot problems with the latest & greatest. It's the way it is in Fedora, but only wished for in openSUSE. This insurance in openSUSE requires multiversion(kernel) enabled, and manual removal of excess kernel(s). I'm not sure why it should be difficult for zypper or YaST2 to be configured to never uninstall the running kernel/initrd in openSUSE, regardless whether multiversion is set or not. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." I really hope not so. especially under factory, it's good to have a previous kernel. And how will the dev's knows better than the admin of one computer what should be installed ? How many computers kernel upgrade have failed for any reasons with a new kernel. It's so easy to have a previous working kernel, the fail, ok just a reboot on the old one and you're back online. (we don't have anymore a rescue that works ...) If a "end" user setup enable and let its boot partition or / fillup well he don't know how to manage his computer. We can't do something for him, neither we can't stop him to use it to kill bugs on the window, or use it as a skateboard ... -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch openSUSE Member & Ambassador GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+help@opensuse.org

Michal, That looks fantastic. I have about 10 kernels now because I don't get around to deleting them as often as I should. Once you feel good with this, can we get in tumbleweed? I know. If rc7 had not been out, I had requested the patch to be added, but "please rc7" was easier ;-) Thanks, a current Kernel:HEAD is really appreciated since it makes it very easy to follow the development and to report bugs without having to compile it all the time. Oh - and for those having problems with multiversion etc: here is my nifty trick for that: * install kernel-default from FACTORY * install kernel-desktop from Kernel:HEAD (default used) A "zypper up" will now install the older -default from FACTORY and the bleeding edge -desktop from K:H. Usually, one of both will work. (Yes, since right now both have the same kernel version, it would not have helped Ismail, but it saved me quite a few times when the "bleeding edge" was a bit too sharp) Best regards, Stefan -- Stefan Seyfried "Dispatch war rocket Ajax to bring back his body!" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+help@opensuse.org
Just for feedback on factory aka 12.1 M3 troubles. Installing with a factory Net Build 132 CD I had 3.0.0 rc6 crash with watchdog reporting hard lockup on CPU 1. Odd because with Tumbleweed I hit no trouble with 3.0 rc6. Using kernel-vanilla got me freshly installed. 3.0.0-rc7-3-desktop from Kernel:HEAD upgrade has booted fine.
