[opensuse-kernel] kernel-syms-2.6.29-62.1 requires ALL kernel -devel packages

[opensuse-kernel] Filesystem becomes readonly when listening to music

Hi, If I listen to music for some time (I guess around 1 hour after starting listening to music) my filesystem becomes readonly and I can't continue using the system, so I have to reboot. When I do it, fsck has to check the filesystem for 20 minutes and find some errors but I have never lost data (yet). I have already run the hard drive auto-diagnostic in the notebook BIOS (HP Pavillion dv2872br) but no problems were found. At first I thought the problem was with the nvidia driver, but at the nvidia forum they said there was nothing related to nvidia in my log files and I had no video problems. Anyway, as the filesystem gets readonly, no information is recorded to the log files. I could get a lot of information running nvidia-bug-report.sh in a folder in my windows partition (witch was not readonly), it's output is attached to this message. While we eliminated a *lot* of patches between 2.6.27 and 2.6.29, we're still carrying around more than 350 patches. Some of them are needed for our build infrastructure and we'll be carrying those around forever. A lot of them are for things like Xen, swap over nfs, lttng, and perfmon. While I'd like those to go upstream, I'm not holding my breath. I see things like multipath extensions/fixes, driver fixes, acpi quirks, etc that should all definitely be upstream. [opensuse-kernel] Some thoughts about 'heavy' kernels...

Hi, Some filosophy.... Maybe i do not make any sense at all, but i am thinking on this for a long time now. When inspecting a hardware system, before installation, communication is going on between hardware detection and all devices on the board, to find out which drivers are needed, to ensure optimal working of the machine with the os. This image, of 'what' exactly is in the particular system, is the template to start the machine and the os, to look at the list of modules to be started. ToDo list. My thought is that what is nessesary should be there, but what is not needed, should not be. So the 'image', can be used to start-up the system, without looking for everything, if it is still there, because it 'knows' everything is there, because why would that change, but if it does, a hardware config module would be handy, to start hardware detection, of to 'mention' the device manualy. (i am not talking about hotplugging devices, but another video-card, or soundcard, or a pcie-usb card, something like that.) This way, a very light startupfile would be able to start up the system, which would save an oughfull lot of actual startup time. This eeepc901 has usb dvd-drive. Startup 'waits' for the device, whetter it is plugged in or not. Why would it wait if it knew the drive was not plugged in? (in this case, to boot from another device would be activated by pressing esc, during first startup, before/during bios invoke screen..) So there is two things: 1) hardware that is 'allways' around, and 2) hotplugging devices. Checking the usb-busses, and other removable cardbusses are checked, and expected to find something connected. After a few boots, software can 'know' the routine of what is used to power-up. To install, all modules need to be present, but only those needed, have to be installed. That is what i actualy mean. Not carry load, that is not needed. The os logs. It can know which apps are used, and which not. It can unload those, that are never used, and started manualy when nessesary, if instructed to do so. This 'tuning' cannot be done by regular users without extensive study, but the os can and should know, and act accordingly. [opensuse-kernel] New package schema for kernel-source

Is it intended that only the noarch.rpm with the kernel-source was updated today in ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/kernel/kotd/HEAD/x86_64 but the -devel.rpm with the configuration files hasn't been updated from 2.6.29- master_20090331140119_768f098d to 2.6.29-master_20090402214554_88d83597 ? [opensuse-kernel] How to let kernel find onboard wireless-card?

Hi, I am testing/using kernel 2.6.29-56 from Kernel:HEAD repo, which is working fine, and very quick with my eee-pc-901. However, with this kernel no hw-info is available for the rt2860 wifi card, so it is not there to configure and use. The other kernel which came with 11.1: 2.6.27.19- 3.2-pae, does find the card, and it is useble. How will i be able to get the card detected by the 2.6.29-56 kernel? -- Have a nice day ;) Oddball aka M9.
