[opensuse-kde] KDE in Tumbleweed just died a horrible death
So, with the recent reorg of packages in the KDE repos, KDE in Tumbleweed is horribly confused. What should I do? Link everything I previously was in the 412 repo with something else? thanks, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

You should link to KDE:Current. Like that you'll get new stable versions as they come. -- Luca Beltrame - KDE Forums team KDE Science supporter GPG key ID: 6E1A4E79

Where will the releases be developed? In :Current? I ask as it usually takes a few days to get things settled down and working properly for a new KDE update, _and_ there are usually new packages that need to get pulled into the repo and the like. In other words, how will I know that it's safe to update to the packages in that repo? When they change? Or when someone says it's ok? Or when they are "published"? I'm all for rolling-repos, but I'd like to not break Tumbleweed user's machines if at all possible. And note, I don't run KDE, so I'll just blindly keep updating the packages as you go, and I'll never know the difference, so you don't want me to be the judge of this :) thanks, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

There is a staged approach for bigger updates. e.g. KDE 4.13 will be first dropped in KDE:Distro:Factory and tested. Only when we have the confirmation that it works, the packages are moved to KDE:Current. With regards to bug fixes, we do those directly in KDE:Current as that they are just bugfixes and no new functionality is introduced. This is actually the same principle as before. bugfix releases were directly put into the respective KRXY release and for a newer version, we created a new KRX(Y+1) repository.

When the packages are changing in that repository, then it should be safe in general to also update Tumbleweed. KDE:Current is NOT a development repository nor will there be any package in there that is not officially released. As indicated the development repository for KDE is KDE:Distro:Factory and for every new release (e.g. KDE 4.13, 4.14, etc) we are building against Factory and the current openSUSE release). Normally we have quite a number of people that are running the current openSUSE release that are testing the new release (starting with the Beta release), so once the official release is out, you could expect the update in KDE:Current after about 1 week time.
I'm all for rolling-repos, but I'd like to not break Tumbleweed user's machines if at all possible.
And we don't want to break the user machines with oS 13.1 and oS 12.3 either.:) Based on this I think that there are two ways forward, namely: 1) We stick to the old procedure. You either perform a copy of the packages (maybe a link to the packages in KDE:Current would now be better (osc linkpac -c) and then just update the link whenever you want to update the packages in Tumbleweed. 2) You keep the standard KDE packages that comes with the initial release of Tumbleweed and we start building KDE:Current against Tumbleweed. This way you do not have to worry about KDE. In my opinion the first one (and especially using the linkpac option) would be the best one. We will announce new releases in KDE:Current on the opensuse and opensuse-kde mailinglists, so that users are aware of a possibly update. At that moment you can decide to either update the links at that moment or to wait a couple of days more.
And note, I don't run KDE, so I'll just blindly keep updating the packages as you go, and I'll never know the difference, so you don't want me to be the judge of this :)
We will never ask this from you :) It is great that you are keeping Tumbleweed going and we are here to assist you in any way we can with regards to the KDE packages. It took some work (obs didn't like the old stale package links), but I think I got it all straightened out. Should take a day or so to settle down with all of the package builds, so let's see how it works out then. thanks, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Hey, that was faster than expected... If someone could do a 'zypper dup' on the tumbleweed repo, and let me know if there are any problems with it or not, that would be great. I'm away from my openSUSE box at the moment, and my virtual machine just ran out of disk space :( thanks, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

At least from the mirror I'm using, this is still incomplete. A "dup" would upgrade about a third of the packages to 4.12.4, but downgrade the rest of the packages from 4.12.3 to 4.11.x, falling back to openSUSE-current-Update-OSS. Can you try again? Everything says it is pushed properly out, and the packages all seem to be correct as well. What packages are wanting to be downgraded? thanks, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Yes. However, Tumbleweed didn't refresh, so no new packages arrived in the repo/mirror since morning.
What packages are wanting to be downgraded?
There are a few packages that I expect to downgrade since you've based it off a new source and they started to have new build numbers. Yes. However, Tumbleweed didn't refresh, so no new packages arrived in the repo/mirror since morning.
What packages are wanting to be downgraded?
There are a few packages that I expect to downgrade since you've based it off a new source and they started to have new build numbers. The rest reverts to openSUSE-current-Update-OSS and an earlier KDE version and that can't be right.

Yes. However, Tumbleweed didn't refresh, so no new packages arrived in the repo/mirror since morning.

There are a few packages that I expect to downgrade since you've based it off a new source and they started to have new build numbers. The rest reverts to openSUSE-current-Update-OSS and an earlier KDE version and that can't be right.

It seems that Tumbleweed is missing the openSUSE branding. The actual packages for KDE 4.12.4 are in Tumbleweed, but they choke on the missing branding (upstream branding is there, but I've not tried to switch to it). If I lock *branding-openSUSE, then zypper dup calculates an update list that seems to be correct. You have to switch to upstream branding to get tumbleweed to work, that's a long-standing issue that I do not know how to resolve. Try doing that to see if it solves your issue.

Good, or just remove that package, and the upstream package should be installed automatically, and then it should all work. GNOME has this same issue, so it's not a KDE thing. Someday it will be resolved, but I doubt any year soon... thanks, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

I'm fairly certain that the openSUSE branding packages installed on my machine came from Tumbleweed (initially from 13.1 of course), so I don't understand why this changes now. It seems I can switch branding to basedonopensuse instead of upstream, but I don't really know what both these options would change. If somebody could tell me please, I'm not really keen on having to re-configure my whole desktop. Hi Achim, As I indicated in my previous message there are two KDE branding packages that are not building due to missing dependencies. These packages deliver exactly the above mentioned packages. (main packages are kde-branding-openSUSE and kdebase4-openSUSE).
libprison0 openSUSE -> KDE
The last library is another package that apparently didn't transfer to Tumbleweed, not sure if it's important or not.
This is a library that allows you to use barcodes for the kaddressbook. At this moment I guess that the standard package from the 13.1 repo is taken, which is fine. The solution is simple as that there is only one missing package in Tumbleweed (desktop-data-openSUSE) that needs to be updated as that the branding-openSUSE package was updated in version Temporary solution would be indeed to lock the branding packages and to update from Tumbleweed. Yes, I saw that only after I've sent my posting. Thanks for having a look and offering a solution.

I'll wait until Tumbleweed is fixed rather than creating a chance to mess up my installation. There aren't any urgent fixes waiting.
Nothing to reconfigure, this is just the splash screen and stuff like that. As for "why now", this happens every time in Tumbleweed, once a major desktop upgrade happens. Happened for GNOME before, and I'm pretty sure for KDE as well. I'd love to be able to find the root problem, without having to jump the version to 13.2, but maybe that's really the only way forward now... greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

This also works for me, although, I still had ~10 items which required downgrading. Further examination of those items revealed that their version was only available in (System Packages), probably versioning differences, so I allowed the downgrade and see no problems as long as 'lock *branding-openSUSE' is employed. Hi Greg, Based on the issue reported, I had a look at the Tumbleweed repository. The first thing that I noticed is that the required branding packages for KDE (kde-branding-openSUSE and kdebase4-openSUSE) are both set to unresolvable. Checking further this is caused as that the package desktop-data-openSUSE is expecting a wallpaper-branding 13.1 version. Which in the Tumbleweed repository will never happen as that your branding package (branding-openSUSE) is version 13.2. I assume that this is causing the issue with regards to the branding packages. Two ways to resolve it: 1) Include the desktop-data-openSUSE package into the Tumbleweed repository and bump the version to 13.2 (At this moment you could take the package from Factory) 2) Keep the branding-openSUSE package at the correct version of 13.1 and only bump the versioning here with every real openSUSE update. I guess at this moment option 1 would be the easiest and fastest, but in the future it might be good to keep the branding packages at the original version. This should resolve at least the issue with the KDE branding packages and most likely it should also resolve the issue with the gnome branding packages. I assume that this is causing the issue with regards to the branding packages. Two ways to resolve it:
1) Include the desktop-data-openSUSE package into the Tumbleweed repository and bump the version to 13.2 (At this moment you could take the package from Factory)
Why doesn't KDE:Current need this package?
2) Keep the branding-openSUSE package at the correct version of 13.1 and only bump the versioning here with every real openSUSE update.
Bump the versioning where?

Because it is not having an uprev openSUSE-branding package (or that package at all, so it uses the one from 13.1 to resolve).
2) Keep the branding-openSUSE package at the correct version of 13.1 and only bump the versioning here with every real openSUSE update.

At the moment, keep the version of that package at 13.1, then bump it to 13.2 only after openSUSE-current rolls over.

Hi Greg, In KDE:Current we have the branding-openSUSE package there, but it is disabled. We only need the kde-branding-openSUSE stuff from that package in case we bump the KDE SC version from 4.12 to 4.13.
Why doesn't KDE:Current need this package?
KDE:Current doesn't need this particular package as that it relies on the underlying branding-openSUSE package from the oS version it builds against. KDE:Current will not change any openSUSE branding :)
2) Keep the branding-openSUSE package at the correct version of 13.1 and only bump the versioning here with every real openSUSE update.

I noticed that you are building the branding-openSUSE package with version 13.2. Tumbleweed is actually based on 13.1, so this is causing issues with all kind of branding packages. As that you are building against openSUSE 13.1 anyway, you should just disable this package (DO NOT DELETE, as that we need kde-branding-openSUSE) and only delete the binaries build from branding- openSUSE. Hope this clarifies it a little further :) Regards Raymond -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Hi Greg, What I noticed is that you indeed disabled the package and you disabled the "use for build" flags. But this will not really have the effect that you are seeking. You need to remove the binaries that branding-openSUSE created. Either through the webui or by using osc: osc wipebinaries -a openSUSE:Tumbleweed branding-openSUSE Or go to the package details in the webui and click on standard. Then you see the binaries it has build. There you have to delete for both i586 and x86_64. Without these binaries being deleted, the issue will remain Regards Raymond -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

I was fortunate for two things :) The first thing is that I already went through a similar exercise with the KDE:Release:XY repositories and the maintenance updates. The branding is one of the more difficult items as that a lot of things are depending on it. That is why we also choose for a different technical setup for the KDE branding to avoid the need for rebuilding branding files. Secondly I was fortunate that Greg is a great listener and follower :) Tumbleweed should be in the right shape now, but lets see with the next KDE update. Expectations is that this would be sometime end of April/beginning of May when we have KDE 4.13 released. As indicated KDE 4.13 will not be put in KDE:Current directly but first tested for 1 to 2 weeks in KDE:Distro:Factory to ensure that the packages are working. Where will the releases be developed? In :Current? I ask as it usually takes a few days to get things settled down and working properly for a new KDE update, _and_ there are usually new packages that need to get pulled into the repo and the like.
Is there a reason you must have KDE in Tumbleweed? If not, you could simply drop it and advise people to use KDE:Current instead if they're so inclined (which then needs to be built against Tumbleweed in addition to the other targets). Yes, you clearly are misreading this, because the statement is clear
Don't you mean, "which then DOESN'T NEED to be built against Tumbleweed....."?
If you read it thoroughly, then you would have read that Achim is proposing to drop the KDE Packages from Tumbleweed itself and to let people use packages from KDE:Current. As that KDE:Current is only building for oS 12.3 and oS 13.1, a new build target should be added which is Tumbleweed. Maybe things are said differently down under, but Achim's message was correct.
