Help: Delay and ethernet traffic during app startup.
Hi, I have not much knowledge about X, so I have no clues about how to resolve a problem I'm experiencing in my new SUSE 8.1. Whenever I start a program in X (KDE), it spends *several* seconds apparently doing nothing, until it finally starts and shows in the desktop. I've discovered that during the delay, it is actually generating a fairly amount of network traffic, and is this what causes the delay, as if it was sending requests to somewhere and they were being unattended until it finally gives up... Can somebody give me a clue about what is happenning here? I have a single computer connected to an ADSL router via Ethernet card. Network settings are configured automátically with DHCP. BIG thanks in advance to everybody! 8-)

The only strange problem I have come across with KDE in a network situation is when logging in and "set host name via dhcp" (or similar) in the yast2 network card configuration module is not set. This is more an x issue that a kde issue afaik (x is a network orientated). Is this set or not for you? also check the output of tcpdump while launch a kde application as this will give you a better idea of what it's trying to do. Cu, -Paul
