[opensuse-kde] Removing KDE:KDE3 apps from openSUSE:Factory
Hello, as mentioned in the last IRC meeting, there is still a number of KDE3 apps in openSUSE:Factory, and at least some of those really shouldn't be there on the account of being horribly old, unmaintained and so on. I checked what from KDE:KDE3 still links to openSUSE:Factory and here is the list, together with recommendations. The plan is that I will request removing of all the ones marked with 'drop', unless somebody speaks up for them. And the removing will be from openSUSE:Factory, not KDE:KDE3, just to make that sure. Feel free also to suggest dropping of further apps where I am not sure. * celestia - appears to be maintained, keep "Celestia is a free real-time space simulation that lets you experience our universe in three dimensions.", http://celestia.sourceforge.net * datakiosk - drop, I can't even find it in svn "DataKiosk is a JuK-like database interface tool for generic SQL databases.", http://extragear.kde.org/apps/datakiosk/ * kbiff - keep? last release a year ago, but still KDE3, and do we need something like this when it's KDE3? "tray icon showing mailbox status", http://kbiff.granroth.org/ * kcfgcreator - drop, unmaintained for quite some time (mentions KDE3.2) for editing KConfigXT files, http://extragear.kde.org/apps/kcfgcreator/ * kconfigeditor - drop, like kcfgcreator http://extragear.kde.org/apps/kconfigeditor/ * kdbg - keep? last release half a year ago, but no kde4 http://www.kdbg.org/ * kdbus - drop, unmaintained (even its page says so) "D-BUS service browser for KDE" http://rohanpm.net/kdbus * kde3-kst - keep/drop? there is kde4 version in playground * kdirstat - keep? I find this quite useful, but last release in '06 "graphical disk usage utility, very much like the Unix "du" command" http://kdirstat.sourceforge.net/ * kinternet - keep? I think some people still use this (and even need?) connection manager, SUSE * kio_ipodslave - drop? last release dec'07, works only with KDE3 apps KDE3 kioslave for iPod, http://kpod.sourceforge.net/ipodslave/ * kio-locate - drop, last release '06, works only with KDE3 apps KDE3 kioslave for searching for files, http://arminstraub.com/browse.php?page=programs_kiolocate * kio_slp - drop? - is this useful in any way when it's KDE3 kioslave? KDE3 kioslave for KDE3, from adrianS * klamav - keep, feb'09 antivirus, http://klamav.sourceforge.net/ * kmymoney - keep, feb'09 personal finance manager, http://kmymoney2.sourceforge.net/ * konserve - drop?, mar'04 periodic backup, http://konserve.sourceforge.net/ * kpl - drop, dec'05 , graph plotting, http://frsl06.physik.uni-freiburg.de/privat/stille/kpl * kpowersave - drop, who needs this with PowerDevil? power manager, SUSE * krecord - drop? is there a replacement? nov'04 Simple sound recording app, http://linux.bytesex.org/misc/krecord.html * krpmbuilder - drop, apr'05 , it's probably hopefully obsolete wizard app for creating rpms, http://krpmbuilder.sourceforge.net/ * kscpm - keep? suse stuff for scpm * ksimus - drop, apr'03 "KSimus is a KDE tool for simulation, automatization and visualization of technical processes." http://ksimus.berlios.de/ * kvirc - keep? has kde4 snapshots IRC client, http://www.kvirc.net/ * kvocabs - drop, jul'05 "KVocabs is an application for learning vocabulary. " http://kvocabs.homac.de * kwatch - drop?, aug'04 fancy 'tail -f', http://www.m-j-s.net/kde/ * kxmleditor - drop, dec'04 xml editor, http://kxmleditor.sourceforge.net/ -- Lubos Lunak KDE developer -------------------------------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX, s.r.o. e-mail: l.lunak@suse.cz , l.lunak@kde.org Lihovarska 1060/12 tel: +420 284 084 672 190 00 Prague 9 fax: +420 284 028 951 Czech Republic http://www.suse.cz -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Lubos Lunak Hi Lubos
Read through your list and tend to agree w/ your assesment although I would try to keep krecord, kpl and ksimus until replacements are found. Unmaintained is not nescessarily an issue if the program works well though obviously having them ported to kde4 is preferable. Seems that there are plasmoids that fill kbiffs shoes so that might be dropped. As a suggestion perhaps there should be a KDE:Unmaintained repo that would make it more obvious to potential contributers that these apps are in need of some love. Apps that live in Unmaintained for more than a year should be further considered for removal. Isn't in practice KDE:Community that repository already? :-) Bye, Steve -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

I like and use it still (even in commercial settings), as it is able to monitor some configurable accounts _AND_ imap folders, while it disappears, when those mails are read. I'm patching it to appear in the lower left corner. Yes, kmail has this systray icon, but knowing, that I've yet 586806 mails to read is not the same functionality. Here are my opinions where I have one. For the others the suggestions look ok for me.
* krecord - drop? is there a replacement? nov'04 Simple sound recording app, http://linux.bytesex.org/misc/krecord.html
Maybe good to keep. Don't think there's an alternative other than Audicity or similar.
* kvirc - keep? has kde4 snapshots IRC client, http://www.kvirc.net/
I say drop. If we want multiple KDE irc clients in the distro, it would be better to have Quassel as #2 imo, but I guess that's too late. I miss NetworkManager-kde on the list. Is it planned to be kept? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

I somehow skipped it. Don't have strong opinions. I mainly raised it because I was curious what other people thought about it. Guess it depends on how good knm4 can become in time for 11.2 ;-) On the other hand nm-applet might be a better "fallback" than unmaintained kde3 knetworkmanager anyway. So I tend to think knm3 won't do any good in 11.2. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

I would agree, NM applets proved to be very touchy. Greetings, Stephan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

+1 keep

+1 keep, was just added to DVD
* kde3-kst - keep/drop? there is kde4 version in playground
kst in Factory is a KDE4 (development) version
* kdirstat - keep? I find this quite useful, but last release in '06 "graphical disk usage utility, very much like the Unix "du" command" http://kdirstat.sourceforge.net/
More keep, but very similiar to fsview in Konqueror.
* kinternet - keep? I think some people still use this (and even need?) connection manager, SUSE
It was just added to DVD for people as fallback. :-|
* konserve - drop?, mar'04 periodic backup, http://konserve.sourceforge.net/
Does Kubuntu still include it by default?
* krecord - drop? is there a replacement? nov'04 Simple sound recording app, http://linux.bytesex.org/misc/krecord.html
I don't know a replacement. Bye, Steve -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

As bnc#527549 pointed out, qinternet is a Qt4 port. Bye, Steve -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
