Want to test KDE 3.5b2 - how to revert to KDE 3.43 later?
The subject says it all I guess. I want to test KDE 3.5b2, but if I have a problem I would like to return to KDE 3.43. I know that YaST detects the prescence of newer versions of packages and hence I can use "Update all in this list when a new version is available" but I am not sure this will work in the reverse direction - tell me when an *older* version is available. Can anyone give me a set of instructions to "safely" test 3.5b2? Thanks. Shriramana.
The safest way is to compile your own KDE . For example you can install it in /opt/kde3.5 and create new user. You have to set KDEDIR=/opt/kde3.5 for the new user. Put in .xinitrc /opt/kde3.5/startkde Then just start KDE with startx. When you want to remove 3.5 : rm -fr /opt/kde3.5 That's it. On Monday 24 October 2005 21:31, Shriramana Sharma wrote:

If you install RPM's for KDE-3.5 they will replace the existing KDE. I don't see problem in this, because you can easily remove kde3.5 and install 3.4.x again (You may loose your settings). About the compilation: Well , it is not very hard (but time consuming ) task.I'm compiling arts, kdelibs and kdebase for about 4 hours on 2 machines with icecream. It can take more than a day to compile all of KDE. If you have the desire to compile KDE, this links are good for start: http://developer.kde.org/build/compile_cvs.html http://developer.kde.org/source/anonsvn.html You can allways skip the part with QT, but you must install qt3-devel packages. Basicly compilation is like this : Get the sources. make -f Makefile.cvs (only if the sources are from svn. I think that the daily snapshot shouldn't need that) ./configure --prefix/opt/kde-3.5 make make install This repeats for all the packages you want to install in this order: arts kdelibs kdebase ...... Make sure you have the devel packages from openssl , libxml.. This is the list : http://kde.org/info/requirements/3.5.php On Tuesday 25 October 2005 12:22, Shriramana Sharma wrote:
