Hi I got a Yakumo Quicksilver USB 2.0 flash-memory. My SuSE 8.2 box has only a usb 1.1 port but the device was recognized (as /dev/sda1 on one machine and /dev/sdc1 on another). The problem appeared when I tried to mount the memory, I got an error message about wrong filesystem or bad blocks. How should this device be mounted? Thank you.

What does /etc/fstab indicate? Usually ... mount /media/sdx1 but, perhaps: mount -t vfat /dev/sdx1 /media/sdx1 note: drive indicator replaced by 'x' above. read, ... man mount and/or info mount -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org

Never had an USB flash memory yet but: is it already formatted? If yes, do you know what type of filesystem? If not: have you tried to create a filesystem? ovidiu, I think you answered your own question. A usb 2.0 device that you plugged into a usb 1.1 slot? Did the instructions for the device mention that it was backward compatible and would work with 1.1 usb? well this was also my concern but it seems that it works on a XP machine with usb 1.1 port also. I formated on this machine the memory as FAT and then tried to mount it under linux using mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /media/sda1. I got the following error message: "mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1, or too many mounted file systems". I did a hwinfo --usb and got: 02: USB 101.0: 10a00 Hub [Created at usb.100] Unique ID: B3Fu.Jt1hg9mdkyE Hardware Class: hub Model: "Hub" Hotplug: USB USB GUID: 000000000000000000000000 USB Device status: driver active ("hub") Speed: 1.5 Mbps Config Status: cfg=new, avail=yes, need=no 03: USB 106.0: 10a00 Hub [Created at usb.100] Unique ID: B3Fu.iTi1674Z160 Hardware Class: hub Model: "Yakumo USB Embedded Hub" Hotplug: USB Vendor: usb 0x067b "Prolific Technology, Inc." What ist the output of fdisk -l /dev/sda ? This should list existing partitions. Daniel Am Donnerstag, 14. August 2003 18:21 schrieb ovidiu pascui:

Okay. The partition you created under WinXP ist not readable under Linux. I don't know the reason for this, but you can try to create and format partitions under linux and if this works you can try if you can access this partition under WinXP. Daniel Am Donnerstag, 14. Hi I had the same problem with a 2.0 USB pendrive. I had installed the 2.4.21 kernel and the promlem vaished. You can mount the device with the "mount /dev/sda /mnt" not "/dev/sda1" !! I hope this helps Zsolt ovidiu pascui wrote:

Zsolt, So where did you get the kernel? I am having a similar problem with a Sandisk Cruzer pendrive. The USB and SCSI recognize it, but when I try to mount it, the process goes off to never-land. I am running the latest update of the Suse 8.2 kernel. Thanks, Rich
