X starts only in failsafe mode
I installed SuSE 8.2 minimal with X (TWM) and no KDE/Gnome. Later when my system hardware has been upgraded (RAM esp.), I installed KDE base, libs and utils. And now when I boot into INIT 5, kdm starts up but upon login I find that no matter which WINDOWMANAGER I choose (KDE/fvwm2/icewm) I always get into failsafe mode with a single instance of XTerm. I am able to run "exec startkde" or "exec icewm" and launch my window manager from there, but I would like to have kdm do this which is the normal procedure. Any ideas why X is always going into failsafe mode ? Thanks Vale

Vale, Did you run sax2 to set up your graphics card & monitor? It may not be able to locate a suitable setting for running a gui. Drop down to init 3 and run sax2, then you may get to kde! Hi Pat I'm getting into KDE from failsafe mode by 'exec startkde'. And my graphics card and monitor are detected properly by sax2. Could it be a problem with kdm login manager ? (because thats where it deviates from the normal procedure) Vale

Ok, then it may just be that you need to go into YaST2 and set the level to boot too, like init 5 or specify the gui to be loaded like kdm? Don't recall off the top of my head where exactly it is, but check that to see where you are at. Sorry to just jumping in here and I'm not sure if it is relevant , but my log in screen only gives me the option "" KDE, Default and Failsave". It used to give me about seven options to choose from, but they all seem to have disappeared. Using SuSE 8.2. Greetings from /bill at 169 west , 19 south. Bill, Don't know what would have caused your choices to disappear. Do you know the last time they were all there and what you have done since then as far as updates, changes? You might be able to go into YaST2 and add them back in again. I haven't done that before, but many do when they are trying a new interface. Not sure. Never paid any attention to this because I only use KDE. I just had a look now when Vale mentioned Faisafe and that was when I saw it. You might be able to go into Yast2
and add them back in again. I haven't done that before, but many do when they are trying a new interface.
Thanks Pat. Where in Yast do I do that? -- Greetings from /bill at 169 west , 19 south. Disclaimer: Any errors in spelling, tact, or fact are transmission errors."

Valae, I have to add a new window manager manually to the selecction list using KDE's control center. Underneath "System Manger -> Login Manager" there is a tab card "Sessions". Here you can add manually new installed window manager. This I have to do always when I'm testing a new window manger. Heinrich

I did that also, and am able to see the window managers that I added in "Login Manager", but when I select any of them, and login, I still get into failsafe mode. Would re-installing KDE base packages help ? Vale
