Unfortunately, that is exactly the problem I have - changing things in control center for the background used for KDM has no effect, and I am not sure why.
I think this happen to me once as well. It seem to be that the newer set up could not find the background image. I believe it can be remedied in the controlcenter -> login manager -> backgounds.
hope that helps.

Anders, Thank you - this was indeed the issue. I will forward this to Oliver Ob for inclusion on the Unofficial SuSE FAQ instructions. -ronc On Friday 14 June 2002 03:25 am, Anders Dahlqvist wrote:

If you use kde3 and /opt/kde3/bin/kdm as login-manager and always get an ugly grey xdm-ish background make sure you have the following lines in /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup
kde3root=/opt/kde3/bin #Somewhere near line 52
for p in ${kde1root}/kdm \ #Starting cirka line 62 ${kde2root}/kdm \ ${kde3root}/kdm do

What ever the correction is (sorry I was not following the thread ) make sure you send it to me or use http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?atid=439829&group_id=42064&func=browse if you want it in the unofficial SUSEFAQ
