Hello all, I've this weird problem with my SUSE 9.1 pro. Every now and then when I log out KDE it freezes. The computer is so dead that I can't even do anything and I have to restart it. I'm not sure where I must start to debug it. I couldn't find uot anything wrong in /var/log/messages just before the freezing.I have a samba server 3.0.9-2.6 on it but apart from that I'm not doing any kind of networking. I have installed all the pathces via YaST but see no Difference. I would be grateful if somebody could shed light on it. regards Hamid -- QOTD: "I only touch base with reality on an as-needed basis!"

I'm having the same problem with SuSE 9.2. I believe the problem is either with Xorg or fglrx driver. I don't think it's a KDE issue. See my post "logout freeze" from yesterday in suse-linux-e. Does your screen go black and hang? Can you do a ctrl+alt+backspace and restart X within KDE? Are you using Xorg or Xfree? I can not restart my X server within KDE with ctrl+alt+backspace...I get the same freeze as if I were to logout. -- Jake Sallee spark@breathdedeeply.com www.breathedeeply.com Registered Linux User #358012 http://counter.li.org

Yes the screen just goes blank and ctr+alt+backspace doesn't help at all. I can't do SSH to it or go to a different run level. It is completely dead. I'm using XFree. cheers Hamid

Hi, I have had these issues on and off and have found it is to do with the graphics driver. See if there is a newer version; esp. for NVIDIA as I found this cleared it up the last time. Andrew ------------------------------- Jabber: acolvin@jabber.org MSN: apc@abcj.demon.co.uk ICQ: 44775817

I do see an update for ATI's fglrx in supplementary. I'm going to try upgrading my vid driver to see if that will rectify the problem. I believe that fglrx 8.8.25 was the last thing I did to that machine last week. I'll see if 8.10.19 fixes it. -- Jake Sallee spark@breathdedeeply.com www.breathedeeply.com Registered Linux User #358012 http://counter.li.org

Nope. Driver update did not fix. Sigh. So now it's either KDE or Xorg. -- Jake Sallee spark@breathdedeeply.com www.breathedeeply.com My Desktop: www.breathedeeply.com/screenshot.jpg Registered Linux User #358012 http://counter.li.org

Hamid, I believe you said you were using XFree on SuSE 9.1? I reinstalled my Xorg files and the crashing stopped. Try downloading Xfree rpm's again and run: rpm -Fv xfree-files*.rpm. Let us know if that helps any. -- Jake Sallee spark@breathdedeeply.com www.breathedeeply.com Registered Linux User #358012 http://counter.li.org

Hello Jake, Thanks a lot for the advice. I believe too that it has something to do with the XFree because I have another pc with the same graphic card and the same driver and one of them is not freezing at all. So I reinstalled all the XFree rpms and I'm waiting to see if it crashes again. Thanks again for the help. cheers Hamid

I had something like this on my laptop a while ago, it affected SuSE levels from around 8.0 or 8.1 to 9.1 but not 9.2. Whilst I never actually found a solution, it *was* possible for me to use ssh to log on to the machine remotely, and then close down relatively cleanly with 'su' and 'shutdown'. This worked even though the PC was autistic wrt. Mouse and Keyboard. Unfortunately I can't remember if it only happened if I was running X11/kde or if it also happened when in non-gui mode. Certainly most of the time it happened, I was using the gui. -- opinions personal, facts suspect. http://home.arcor.de/36bit/samba.html

Not a problem. I hope this works for you, too, as I was *very* annoyed with my system halting all the time. Let us know what you find. -- Jake Sallee spark@breathdedeeply.com www.breathedeeply.com Registered Linux User #358012 http://counter.li.org
