Hey, Just wondering if anyone here has managed to get KDM for KDE3 working? After lots of battling, I got KDE3 working, keeping KDE2 and using KDE2's KDM. Attempts to make KDE3's KDM work result only in X flashing on and off, then reverting to console mode. While using KDE2's KDM is perfectly okay (I can live with it, since I can use KDE3 at least), I noticed on my RedHat setup on another computer that when logging out of KDE3, I get more options, such as shutting down the computer directly and such. Don't get that on my SuSE setup, just the standard "Save session for future logins?" prompt that was with KDE2. Is anyone actually using KDE3's KDM on SuSE? If so, how did you get it to work? I'm using: -AMD Duron 800Mhz -Trident Cyberblade video card The latest X 4.2 RPMs off of SuSE The latest KDE3 RPMs off of SuSE Oh, and SuSE 7.3 Professional. Thanks, Joe SuSE 7.3 Pro - Buy it for the stickers. Keep it for the killer Linux setup! ;-)

Have a look at the Unofficial SuSE FAQ: http://susefaq.sourceforge.net/desktops.html#KDE Leen

Actually, it's not that simple. In my case I had KDM3 running under KDE3/X4.2.0, I had followed the Unofficial SuSE FAQ and everything worked perfectly. I then installed a newer build of X4.2.0 from ftp.suse.com (silly me), and KDM3 hasn't worked since. If I downgrade to X4.1.0, KDM3 works fine, but under X4.2.0 it's seems to be impossible. And yes, I have attempted every possible combination uninstall/reinstall of both KDE3 and X4.2.0. S

Exactly. Actually, installing X4.2 after KDE3 screwed up everything on my system. I ended up just doing a full reinstall because it seemed simpler than trying to tweak every little detail to get X back. Reinstalling, I installed KDE and X from the 7.3 disks, upgraded X to 4.2, then tried KDE3 (without the KDE2 compatibility RPM, which from what I've seen is designed solely to prevent KDE from working at all...). And that's how I got to KDE3 working, but still using KDM from KDE2. I'll give the unofficial faq a try, along with the tips given here and see what happens. Thanks, Joe

KDM3 is back and running! I looked over your diffs without finding any really obvious differences between what you did and what I did. Still, I did make a few insignificant changes (/etc/init.d/xdm and /usr/X11R6/bin/wmlist), did init 3, init 5 and KDM3 reappeared from its week long absence. I undid the changes in order to track down the problem, but KDM3 still worked! So, in the end, I am left with a functioning KDM3, but clueless as to how it came about. :-) S

The xdm change was (IMO) most probably significant enough! Did you change the order of the tests for kde2 and kde3? The kde3 test has to come last, otherwise it would be overridden by the kde2 test.
