konqueror & java - suse 9.1
I've just updated my system to suse 9.1 and konqueror isn't able to run java anymore. The error I'm seeing in the konsole when I try to load a web page that's using java is: INTERNAL ERROR on Browser End: Some problem with the version 5 System error?:: No such file or directory I have konqueror set to use the java in /usr/lib/java/bin/java but it doesn't seem to find it even though I can go to the directory and execute it e.g. java -version and get: java version "1.4.2_03" Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_03-b02) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2_03-b02, mixed mode) Is there some other java I should be pointing konqueror to? Is there some permission issue I'm missing? Mozilla 1.6 runs the java web pages without difficulty. Grateful for any pointers. Thanks. Geoff

Geoff, I'm still with 9.0, but running KDE 3.2.2 and my Konq is pointing to the java in /usr/lib/java/jre/bin/java. That is the default that was setup on install of 9.0 for me, I haven't changed that. Tried that - while there is an executable java there, it still does not work in Konqueror though. Thanks for the thought. Geoff

Ok, then try this. Make sure that your plugin, located in the /opt/mozilla/lib/plugins directory is a link to the actual java file, located in /usr/lib/java/jre/bin/. Many things for Konq now balk at being the actual plugin. They need to be a link instead. Mozilla doesn't care either way for some things, but if you check the readme files for most of the plugins now, they specifically instruct you to make a link to the actual file. Tried your suggestion - I still get this error in the konsole window: INTERNAL ERROR on Browser End: Some problem with the version 5 System error?:: No such file or directory which is frustrating since all the files & directories do exist (or the symbolic links exist) and I can execute java from them. I don't understand why konqueror seems to think they don't exist. Strange?! Geoff

That doesn't sound like a Java error Geoff, but something else you are experiencing. Be sure to go into your Konq settings and turn Java on "globally", as well as pointing Konq to the actual java at /usr/lib/java/jre/bin/java. Be sure too also have Konq rescan for plugins in the Plugins section of the settings. Again, I'm not sure you are getting a Java error here, but try those things to see what occurs. Oh, I get the list mail too, so no need for you to send out two copies, just send to the list and I'll see it. I definitely agree that I am NOT getting a java error - konqueror is refusing to execute whatever java I point it at. The java console won't even come up. That is what is so frustrating - does there have to be some special file permission on java? -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 24596 2004-04-05 18:06 java There have been several things amiss with the 9.1 update. This is just one of them... Geoff
