Thanks, but we consider 3.0.0/1/2 non-fuctional, based on experience, and posts to the lists. Question is, will 3.0.3 and 3.1 be so, too? (Given problems that we have now: only one font, printing doesn't work, gpg doesn't work, konq has problems, etc) I'm guessing 3.0.3 will be better and 3.1 will be worse, functionally. Not just K problems, but global (packages). Konq had major problems, PIM software, GPG... seemed like everything. Where do you think the problems might be? I am tenuous here. I've never been quite comfortable with auto updaters. Although I'm warming up to apt quite a lot. KDE 3.0.1 was a bug fix release and it didn't fix all bugs. There have been 3 more builds of 3.0.2 which fixed quite a few bugs. One thing I would suggest is that if you were using 7.3 on these machines at work ..never upgrade the boss until you've pounded out a new release yourself. I'm not completely familiar with all the hardware specs of that model. I guess I could look it up but I have 4 people here with IBM Thinkpads running 8.0 and it works pretty well. They only laptop that has had issues is a Dell w/ an nVidia chipset and I simply think it's the nVidia driver...because the problems occurred after an upgrade of the nVidia kernel driver and GLX package. Konq is nice..but it does have some issues. I personally use Mozilla and recommend it to everyone. It runs quite nicely in KDE. As far as PIM software that's a pretty broad subject...I'd have to know what your using.. Also if you want a good PIM ..give Evolution a try. I've got quite a few happy campers in my dept using it. They tried it themselves ..configured it themselves and love it. The PIM software I use is JPilot. It does everything I want and works quite well with my Visor. Well, all I can say is I don't have any of these problems here. This is the route I followed installing SuSE Linux 8: - Installed from DVD - hand-picked apps to be installed. I always do that because I don't want/need a lot of the default stuff (for example for printing i want CUPS, lprng is default for SuSE). - installed and configured apt. (Since I first used apt I never bothered with YOU anymore). - Got all the updates with apt: apt-get update, apt-get -f install, apt-get upgrade and then ran SuSEconfig. -configured the boxes the way i wanted. Presto! A fully functional SuSE Linux 8 with KDE 3.0.2. Done that on 8 completely different desktop machines, including a Thinkpad 600E, without any problems. (Did the same on quite a few servers too but that's without KDE). The problems you describe don't really seem related to KDE: gpg, only one font (?). Konq had a few problems but most of them are ironed out now and if it doesn't do what you want, why not install Mozilla or Opera or even good (bad) old Netscape? One thing I always did have problems with was getting NVidia drivers to work properly, but that's not really a SuSE related problem (I got rid of the NVidia card and bought one from Matrox for my PC at home). Consider trying to install it this way and see if you still experience the same problems and if so, please provide us with a few more details. regards, Marcel

yast-1.13.2-34.rpm Suse should keep it working, even give it mouse-support. It works so good because of it's relative simplicity.

An important lesson: Never install a package because it is newer! Only install it because you think you need it. I have kde 3.0.2 stable on suse 7.3, although with a rather simple installation/configuration. May be, scrolling in large pages can make konqueror mad and let him crash with wild scroll-movements in his windows (after some time). Can someone confirm this? It was a not so good idea to keep /opt/kde2 beside /opt/kde3. And certainly not making it still complexer with /etc/opt/kde2 and /etc/opt/kde3. I hope kde will come back with only /opt/kde. And what I really don't understand is, why truetype-fonts still are not the default in KDE. Ruud.
