In version 2.2.2 of Konqueror at least, there's a facility for specifying a "user agent" in the configuration that enables Konqueror to identify itself as some other prowser (IE 5.5 is usually a good choice). It's necessary for accessing web sites that check for browser identity. Trouble is, it seems that it's necessary to specify the user agent individually for each website where it matters. There's no way I can find to say that Konqueror should by default identify itself as, say, IE5.5. Is there some way of doing that that I've missed? Is the behavior in version 3 any better? Paul, Looks like Konq 3 has not brought back the the menu selection of changing it's identity on the fly. I never got much use out of that anyway or saw that it worked as well as setting the "user agent" thing for the sites. I don't visit that many sites that cry out for IE specific that Konq can't handle anyway, so the user agent settings work well for me. Hmmm.....I think I spoke too soon. It seems that if you select a user agent and than select the menu item - Window -> Save View Profile "Web Browser' - it remains as the default for any future sessions. At least for KDE 3.0. Ken
If you enable the extra's tool bar on Konq then you can just change the user agent on the fly. :) It's the little hat icon. * Ken Phelan (kphelan@ix.netcom.com) [020427 21:41]: ::On Saturday 27 April 2002 08:08 pm, Paul W. I can't find a way to select a user agent in KDE 2.2.2. (Except for the site-by-site list in Preferences, of course.) Is this an enhancement in KDE 3.0? Paul

Menu item 'Tools>Change Browser Identification' should be there in 2.2. It will bring up a list of browser id's from which to select. Ken

I assume that the "location string gadget" is the place under the menu bar where you enter a location, right? I tried entering various URLs there and none of them caused "Change Browser Id" to appear under "Tools".

Thats what I meant, correct. try going online, then type www.google.com in the location string gadget (field), and press enter when google is loaded check the tools menu again, "Change Browser Identification" should be there now. hopefully that worked.

Go to the settings menu Settings -> Configure Toolbars when the configure toolbars window opens you should see a lister named "Available Actions". "Change Browser Identification" should be in the list. To add it to your main toolbar just click on "Change Browser Identification" in the left lister, Click the Item you would like it to follow in the right lister (current actions), then click the right pointing arrow that is in between. Press the apply button then ok and you should have the new button Sorry if these instructions are to basic. I can't see any reason this shouldn't work. The problem here is that "Change Browser Identification" isn't in the lefthand list at all. I mentioned the other two items (Bookmarks, Configure Key Bindings) to verify that we were both talking about the same list. What does "Help/About KDE" give you? It isn't. I don't know what else you might do for this one,
When you look under the window menu does it give you an opportunity to ""Save View Profile "Web Browser"" ? If not perhaps the wrong View Profile is being loaded or perhaps your Web Browser View Profile was changed somehow. ---------------snip-------------------

This sounds like the menu itself, read on.
I mentioned the other two items (Bookmarks,Configure Key Bindings) to verify that we were both talking about the same list.
I'm not sure. What your talking about sounds like the Settings menu. not the window that opens if you select "Configure Toolbars..." When I select the settings menu there are 10 Items listed (2 of them ghosted) Show Menubar Show Toolbar Show Extra Toolbar Show Location Toolbar Show BookmarkToolbar View Properties...(ghosted) Remove Properties...(ghosted) Configure Key Bindings... Configure Toolbars... Configure Konqueror If I select "Configure Toolbars..." A new window opens allowing me to make the changes I talked about in my last mail.

Ah, many thanks Pam!! That would explain completely why dh and I have had such trouble in understanding each other (wave to dh). Now the question is how to locate that plugin, given that I don't even know its name. The issue is further confused by the fact that the "Configure Konqueror" menu has an entry for Netscape Plugins but none for just plain Plugins or Konqueror Plugins. I gather that Konqueror itself uses any and all Netscape plugins but none of its own. Now, dh, if you happen to know where your plugin for Change User Agent is hiding out, that would be great! Paul, I first noticed this same problem after updating to the new KDE2 as well. Suddenly the "Change Browser ID" menu selection was gone! I did as you and searched hi & lo to get it back, but I just came to the conclusion that one of the developers failed to put it in when they did their compile. I thought that maybe because the preferences part worked so well, that maybe they saw no need for it in the menu! It never really seemed to work well when I tried usng it from there anyway! I know this question had come up another time and at the time I didn't know as I was getting accustomed to the new SuSE 8 & KDE3, but it's back! Konq now has the menu selection, under Tools to change the browser ID! Another good reason to move to 8 or at the least, KDE3? I haven't actually done it yet, but I think I now know the answer of how to do it in KDE 2.2.2, thanks to Pam and Liz's posts. You need to install the kdeaddons package (the KDE 2.2.2 version should suffice) and then go to Netscape Plugins, where a scan should install the uachanger plugin. The power of mysterious incantations in getting computer programs to behave properly proves itself again. :-) Paul
