how to setting up kde 3.3 similar to 3.1 on suse 9.0?
Hi: I' am running suse 9.0 on PC. I found the default suse 9.0 kde 3.1 theme/ style and icons very attractive. Recently I have upgraded the kde 3.1 to 3.3 what changed the kde lookout. I think that the default suse 9.0 kde 3. 1 themes are superior to that of kde 3.3. I would like to apply the same theme/style and icons in kde 3.3 as I had in kde 3.1 but I don't know how to set it. As I remember the suse 9.0 kde 3.1 theme was keramik and the style was 'suse'. Please help me how I could apply these settings in kde 3.3. Thanks, IG

Start KDE Control Center and go to Appearance>Themes, etc.

You can not use the old KDE 3.1 style with 3.3 unless they are recompiled for 3.3. What window decoration are you looking for? My Suse 9.1 has KDE 3.2.1 , I can upgrade to 3.3 ? Not sure what has occurred on your system, but the "SuSE" window decoration has and still is the default with all installs. If you don't have it available, something is amiss. The high color icons are there, the crystal icons are default, again, if you don't have those, which are installed by default, then something is certainly out of sync with your system. These won't be listed in Themes as that part is changing with each KDE update, so maybe you are just looking in the wrong place? I have upgraded the kde 3.1 (Suse 9.0 default) to 3.3.1 through YAST as follows: I've added the the source of KDE packages to YAST/Source of Installation protocol: ftp server name: ftp.gwdg.de Directory on Server: pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.0/yast-source/ Authentication: Anonymous Turned this source on and all other sources off. Next I started YAST/Install and Remove software, set filter to 'package groups/all', selected and installed the available KDE packages. The installation process went through without problems. After restarting the computer the new KDE 3.3.1 desktop started and is running well. The only problem I've realized so far that I don't have the SUSE desktop theme in the control center (Appearance & Themes/Window Decorations). I also would like to set back the icons to the Crystal SVG 0.6 that I liked better than the one I have currently (Crystal SVG beta 1). Is there a way to do that? Currently the following kde packages are installed: user@navaho:~> rpm -qa|grep kde kdebase3-kdm-3.3.1-3 kdenetwork3-news-3.3.1-5 kdegraphics3-extra-3.1.4-39 kdelibs3-doc-3.3.1-3 kdegraphics3-kamera-3.3.1-3 kdenetwork3-3.3.1-5 kdebase3-devel-3.3.1-3 kdebase3-ksysguardd-3.3.1-3 kdeaddons3-kicker-3.3.1-3 kdelibs3-devel-3.3.1-3 kdeutils3-3.3.1-3 kdenetwork3-lan-3.3.1-5 kdebase3-SuSE-9.0-80 kdeedu3-3.1.4-43 kdeartwork3-sound-3.3.1-3 kdelibs3-3.3.1-3 kdebase3-samba-3.3.1-3 kdegraphics3-3.3.1-3 kdeutils3-laptop-3.3.1-3 kdegraphics3-fax-3.3.1-3 kdenetwork3-mail-3.1.4-41 kdenetwork3-lisa-3.3.1-5 kdegraphics3-postscript-3.3.1-3 kdebase3-nsplugin-3.3.1-3 kdeartwork3-xscreensaver-3.3.1-3 kdemultimedia3-3.3.1-3 kdegraphics3-imaging-3.3.1-3 kdesdk3-3.1.4-63 kdebase3-3.3.1-3 kdenetwork3-vnc-3.3.1-5 kdeaddons3-konqueror-3.3.1-3 user@navaho:~> Thanks, IG

IG Again, I'm not sure what you have run into, but since you are running 9.0, and I've seen this a lot, is that some of the update rpms are actually built on a 9.1 or 9.2 system, which could make them somewhat incompatible with your setup. That's just a theory though, that may not be the case for you. It appears that you have everything installed, did you restart KDE after running /sbin/SuSEconfig? I see the SuSE window decoration in my listing when I click to get the drop down menu. Appearance>Window decorations>(drop down menu)SuSE Now the icons that are installed now are the SVG types, which are the same Crystal theme, but in svg format. The way KDE is built now, it can automatically resize the icons according to your settings. Using the svg icons saves space and gives you an overall better icon image. You can still get the Crystal set (png) from http://www.kde-look.org, as well as many other nice icon sets. Usually there are instructions on how to install them. I always uncompress the icon file then move that directory into my /home/<user>/.kde/share/icons/ The next time you open the Control Center, the theme will be available to you. hope that helps some Lee -- --- KMail v1.7.1 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.1 --- Registered Linux User #225206 "Don't let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game!"

Hello: The SuSE theme problem is solved. I have checked my system again and found: the Suse default window style is located in /opt/kde3/lib/kde3/ as kwin_SuSE.la and kwin_SuSE.so on Suse 9.0 having KDE 3.1. These files belong to the kdebase3-SuSE-9.0-80 package which seems to be distribution dependent (Suse 9.0), thus it's not included among the upgradeable KDE packages. In KDE 3.3 the new kde window style name format is kwin3_*, ie kwin_SuSE.la and kwin_SuSE.so should be replaced by kwin3_SuSE.la and kwin3_SuSE.so for working well. (Since these files were not replaced the SuSE theme does not show up in the windows decorations window.) To resolve the problem I have replaced kdebase3-SuSE-9.0-80 by kdebase3-SuSE-9.1-10.i586.rpm (downloaded from the Suse 9.1 distribution). I had also install Suse 9.1 thinkeramik package and ignore some dependency problems. kdebase3-SuSE-9.1-10 replaced the kwin_SuSE.la and kwin_SuSE.so for kwin3_SuSE.la and kwin3_SuSE.so. Now the SuSE theme is again listed among the windows decorations. I had no time to check the icon problem yet. Thanks, IG
