[opensuse-kde] 11.0 users - 11.0 about to become unsupported
As hopefully all openSUSE 11.0 users know, 11.0 support will be discontinued by the end of this month (http://en.opensuse.org/SUSE_Linux_Lifetime). As a consequence none of the KDE repositories will build anymore for 11.0 following the date and the packages will be removed, so if you want them, the time to download/install them is now. It is of course recommended to upgrade your 11.0 to 11.2 or soon-to-be-released 11.3. -- Lubos Lunak openSUSE Boosters team, KDE developer l.lunak@suse.cz , l.lunak@kde.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Since 11.0 is the last release without showcasing KDE4, it would be nice if: 1-support termination could be delayed until all KDE3 features currently remaining missing from KDE4 are added 2-some dvd iso is available with all 11.0 updates and optional repos, so that KDE3 users can continue as long as necessary for KDE4 to be brought up to KDE3 parity -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." I think what you are asking for is another distro, i.e. one that has an interest in maintaining KDE3. Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Thats not really true, there are KDE3 packages up to including opensuse 11.3 available in the build service repository KDE:KDE3. you still want a maintained base system though, so upgrading openSUSE to something current makes sense anyway. Your statement implies contradiction of the OP of this thread: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-kde/2010-06/msg00110.html

I have about 7 machines with various releases of openSUSE on them. Most of them also keep Factory on them as well, my "server" (half server/half desktop) being the main exception. My "server" needs to keep working as it has, leaving the experimentation/learning to the others. That means the KDE3 features I depend on must be incorporated into KDE4 before "upgrading" it from KDE3. Panel is too easy to corrupt, and difficult to configure to match the KDE3 Kicker's defaults. The prospect of getting Konsole4 to feature parity with Konsole3 seems hopeless. Last experiment where I tried to put KDE3 on 11.2 or 11.3 (I forget which) failed to give me any working X at all, with very few KDE3 packages actually installed. Plus, there has been a whole lot of post-11.0 trouble with RAID1 (grub/initrds?), which my server uses, that I've yet to notice has been fixed in 11.2 or 11.3. I don't foresee any "upgrade" from 11.0 to be any upgrade at all, just a new bunch of headaches. IIRC, it used to be that 4, maybe more, release versions were kept maintained. With 11.0 scheduled to be terminated prior to 11.3 release, the count drops to 2 (even if only for a few weeks). Upgrading every release is much too often (particularly when major software is included in alpha/beta state as has been the case with transition from KDE3 to KDE4). Upgrading every other release is still too often if it's necessary at more frequent than 24 month intervals, the case with 11.0-11.2, which is 18 months. I'd rather much longer than 24, so that "upgrade" time can happen in alternate Januarys to releases at least 3 versions newer instead of a mere 2 or less. There was something nice about 6 month release intervals in this regard, but really I'd rather make do with 8-10 month intervals and just have each last longer. I suppose I'll just have to continue with 11.0 until I figure out how to get my other RAID1 box to run KDE3 on 11.3, then try to clone the process on my server. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." This is a very valid point, IMO. The 11.0 version should not be deleted from the servers at least till 11.3 is released, and hopefully a bit later, after the big bug clearing that occurs just after release. That would allow people using 11.0 a chance to upgrade. Or at worst, the main repos being moved to an archive for some time. Even better if at least important security bugs get some chance to be handled for that initial month of overlap. This was done not so long ago... - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
