[opensuse-kde] startkde: Call to lnusertemp failed (temporary directories full?). Check your installation.
Just added KDE 4.8 repo today on 11.4 system not booted since last August, then did zypper dup (without checking to see if X was working first), hunted down remaining 4.6.0 packages and zypper rm'd them. That resulted in the subject error message when tried with startx, and KDM simply failing to start if booted to runlevel 5. (Where does a KDM startup failure get logged?) Then I zypper rm'd all of KDE and installed it again, which apparently changed nothing. Plenty of disk space is available for tmp files, and tmp dirs all have full write permission. Note below in log "kdostartupconfig4". That looks suspicious, but I don't know how to find out if it's a problem. Note zypper output below doesn't actually say what rpm provides libfam.so.0, but MC can't find one anywhere in the /usr tree. If answers to above questions aren't it, can anyone look at what I've pasted below and tell me what's missing or broken? Google didn't show me anything useful. # .xsession-errors (tail) mesg: ttyname failed: Invalid argument /etc/X11/xim: line 72: [1mexport: command not found sourcing /etc/sysconfig/language to get the value of INPUT_METHOD INPUT_METHOD is not set or empty (no user selected input method). I had the same problem and somehow this library is removed by installing another package. You have to reinstall fam using "zypper in -f fam". -- fr.gr. Freek de Kruijf -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

I've already seen that and concluded it's what happens when two packages own the same file: # rpm -ql gamin |grep libfam /usr/lib64/libfam.so.0 /usr/lib64/libfam.so.0.0.0 # rpm -ql libfam0 |grep libfam /usr/lib64/libfam.so.0 /usr/lib64/libfam.so.0.0.0 the gamin package comes from packman, the libfam0 one from the OSS repo. Reinstall the one that was removed.

Note below in log "kdostartupconfig4". That looks suspicious, but I don't know how to find out if it's a problem. <snip>
Ok, other have already spoken up about the libfam.so.0 problem, no need to iterate that. To the "temp" problem: KDE tries to link 3 'Temp' dirs, the links reside in ~/.kde4/ : Link -> Target :: Why ~/.kde4/cache-$USER -> /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER/ :: permanent temp dir ~/.kde4/socket-$USER -> /tmp/ksocket-$USER/ :: may be deleted on reboot ~/.kde4/tmp-$USER -> /tmp/kde-$USER/ :: may be deleted on reboot The last two are subject to environment variables. E.g. I've set
export TMP=/dev/shm/$USER export TEMP=$TMP TMPDIR=$TMP TEMPDIR=$TMP test -d $TMP && mkdir -p $TMP
in my ~/.bashrc, and ~/.kde4/tmp-$USER links /dev/shm/$USER/kde-$USER/ What I suspect is a existing file with the same name as the temp-dir lnusertemp wants to create and thus fails. Check your /tmp/ and /var/tmp/ dirs for such. I hope this gives the hint you need, cheers, Yamaban. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org
